People walking on street - rack focus to lights\u003cbr/\u003eThe people of the southern Italian city of Naples are getting ready for Christmas in the one way they know best: shopping.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter church on Sunday, crowds flock in their thousands from far and wide to Via Saint Gregorio Armeno, a narrow street in the historical heart of town.\u003cbr/\u003eHere in Via Saint Gregorio Armeno, craftsmen keep alive the centuries-old tradition of carving figurines for Christian Nativity scenes, which represent in miniature Christ's birth over two-thousand years ago in a stable. Each year in the run-up to Christmas across Italy and beyond, these precious figures are dusted off and put out on display in homes, shop windows and inside churches.\u003cbr/\u003eIn its simplest form, the Nativity shows the baby Jesus in a manger, with the Virgin Mary and Joseph looking on in adoration. Devoutly Catholic Italians throng to Naples each festive season to buy new figures to update their Nativity sets, adding a shepherd or a king to the family scene.\u003cbr/\u003eBut you'll find much more than characters from the Bible peering over the baby's crib. Craftsmen like Giuseppe Ferrigno delight customers with new models of popular entertainers or politicians. Shoppers can also buy a mini-Mother Teresa or Pope John Paul II.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, Ferrigno has produced miniature New York firefighters as a tribute to those who died helping Americans during the terror attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Ferrigno will personally present his statuettes to the Neapolitan community in New York at the unveiling of the community Nativity scene before Christmas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tradition of creating Christmas Nativity scenes is said to have been popularised in the 13th Century when St. Francis of Assisi, Italy's patron saint, staged a live reproduction of the birth of Christ, complete with stable animals. Churches adopted the practice, placing statues scuplted from local materials in a setting reflecting the regional landscape.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was in Naples that the art achieved new heights, when in the 18th Century wealthy patrons began commissioning elaborate scenes full of minor characters with no direct connection to the birth of Jesus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nativity became a scene of drama, with a plethora of grotesque street characters crowding streets and balconies. This small museum, above Ferrigno's workshop, houses some of the finest examples of Napoletan Nativity sculpture.\u003cbr/\u003eShepherds and angels mingle with drunken monks and portly cooks - sculpted from wood and clay and dressed in fine silk garments. The figures are said to almost converse with one another.\u003cbr/\u003eThese unique works draw visitors from across the world - and fetch a high price.\u003cbr/\u003eBut shoppers needn't pay the earth to take home a piece of Naples' rich artistic heritage. Here the streets are lined with a range of miniature novelties sure to warm the heart of the young - or the young at heart - at Christmas
