Photo of Ahmed Shah Massood surrounded by flowers - tomb in background\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of Afghan military and government officials made a pilgrimage on Wednesday to the tomb of Ahmed Shah Massood, the Northern Alliance leader whose assassination two years ago was seen as the first al-Qaida salvo in the September 11 attacks on the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eDefence Minister Mohammed Fahim and former President Burhanuddin Rabbani joined more than 1,500 people in solemn ceremony at a domed, hilltop mausoleum in the Panjshir Valley, about 140 kilometers (90 miles) north of Kabul.\u003cbr/\u003eMassood was killed by Middle Eastern assassins posing as journalists who planted a bomb inside a camera that detonated during an interview on September 9, 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack, allegedly carried out by al-Qaida, was believed to have been carefully timed to take out the main opposition leader to the then-ruling Taliban regime just before the attacks on the US. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban had offered sanctuary in Afghanistan to Osama bin Laden and his terror network.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands paid homage at the mausoleum, which is located three kilometers (two miles) from Massood's home village, on Tuesday, but the formal commemoration took place here on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a speech, Fahim said that since Massood's death, Afghanistan had entered a new era and was in the process of realizing a goal of the former Northern Alliance leader: a truly representative government.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that after a loya jirga, or grand council, which is scheduled to approve a new constitution in December, elections would put in place a government that \"belongs to the people of Afghanistan.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKnown as the \"Lion of Panjshir,\" Massood fought against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s and then led the northern-based forces that battled the Taliban in the late 1990s. \u003cbr/\u003eThe alliance swept to power after the Taliban's fall following a US-backed military campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eSince his death, unsavory parts of Massood's past have been glossed over by the government, which is dominated by his Northern Alliance men. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the early 1990s, Massood led one of many factions in battles that obliterated large parts of the capital.
