Children shout at camera\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of Islamic scholars from 29 countries gathered in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad on Wednesday to discuss acceptable ways of combating rapid population growth and aiding development.\u003cbr/\u003eAlong with other developing nations, Pakistan's rapidly rising population is raising concerns about the impact on socio-economic development.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan's population of 150 million is growing at a rate of 1.9 percent annually.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say such growth could double the population in 37 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Ulema Conference on Population Development was attended by leading Islamic thinkers, including the imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, Sheikh Saud al-Shoraim.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan's Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz inaugurated the conference and told participants that it was vital to discuss population planning despite it being, from an Islamic perspective, a sensitive issue.\u003cbr/\u003eHe asked Muslim clerics and scholars to tell Pakistanis that birth control is not against Islam, in a bid to help stabilize the nation's spiraling population.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an opening speech, Aziz said clerics should help Pakistan's government in its goal of stabilizing the\u003cbr/\u003ecountry's population, which currently stands at 150 million and is growing at a rate of 1.9 percent a year. At that\u003cbr/\u003erate, it would double in 37 years.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, Pakistan's government has provided more funding for family planning and promoted different methods of
