in sparking internal conflicts, like the crisis in Darfur, as local people fight for access to precious natural resources.\u003cbr/\u003eMarc Levy, the Deputy Director of the Centre for the International Earth Science Information Network, Earth Institute, at Columbia University, says even though earlier predictions about the effects of global warming have not been fulfilled, the evidence indicates that things are changing.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Sudan the displaced have been forced to live in areas with a serious scarcity of food, water, and medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eCharles Vorosmarty, the director of the Water Systems Analysis Group in the Complex Systems Research Centre at the University of New Hampshire, USA, says that the lack of access to clean water resources claims over two million people a year due to poor sanitation and diarrhoeal diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the drought \"hot spots\" include countries in the Middle East, Asia and North Africa, according to Vorosmarty.\u003cbr/\u003eParts of Nepal witnessed fighting during the 2002 Maoist insurgency.\u003cbr/\u003eLevy noted that the fighting happened in those zones where the drought had hit the hardest.\u003cbr/\u003eLevy now wants to see if a model based on a link between rainfall, climate and conflict can help aid agencies. \u003cbr/\u003eVorosmarty say that poorer regions, such as Africa, are more vulnerable to water scarcity as they lack the necessary resources to cope with the strain.\u003cbr/\u003eDrought has settled over West Africa's Ivory Coast region because the rainy season came late this year.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead of beginning in February, the rains didn't come until March, according to the Famine Early Warning System
