Ruecker leaving news conference\u003cbr/\u003eSerbia's new parliament convened on Wednesday for a vote expected to overwhelmingly reject a UN plan that would give Kosovo virtual  independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe parliament's rejection - a symbolic blow to the UN proposal - would be a strong signal that no compromise over Kosovo's future status is possible, and a resolution to the dispute over the province's final status will have to be imposed by the UN Security Council.\u003cbr/\u003eThe assembly, meeting in its inaugural session after last month's elections, plans to adopt a resolution saying the UN proposal, drafted by envoy Martti Ahtisaari, \"breaches fundamental principles of international law\" and \"illegally lays the foundation for the creation of a new independent state on the territory of Serbia.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne parliamentarian, Bozidar Djelic, vowed to \"defend by all diplomatic and peaceful means\" the unity of Serbia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are not Milosevic, this is not the Serbia of Milosevic. That's their problem\", Ceku said.\u003cbr/\u003eLutfi Haziri, Kosovo's Deputy Prime Minister, said that the time has come for Serbia to consider Kosovo's independence as a solution, which would also be beneficial for Serbia.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile Kosovo's top UN official on Wednesday called for the resignation of the UN's chief police commissioner there following the death of two protesters during clashes on Saturday between police and ethnic Albanian protesters.\u003cbr/\u003eJoachim Ruecker, the UN official in charge of administering Kosovo, said at a news conference in Pristina that he had asked police commissioner Stephen Curtis to resign his post with immediate effect.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Let me state very clearly that the resignation of the police commissioner does not prejudge the ongoing investigation into the two deaths on Saturday,\" Ruecker said. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday, about 3-thousand ethnic Albanians broke through a security cordon and tried to march toward a government building in the capital, Pristina, in protest at a UN plan for the future of the disputed province.\u003cbr/\u003eRiot police opened fired with rubber bullets and tear gas, and clashed with several protesters. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo people - Man Balaj, 30, and Arben Xheladini, 35 - were killed by rubber bullets. Another two were seriously injured while dozens more were treated for the effects of tear gas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clashes prompted Kosovo's Interior Minister Fatmir Rexhepi to resign on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday Curtis had said at a news conference in Pristina that an investigation into the protest was underway and that the force had put \"full resources\" into investigative procedures. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Ruecker said on Wednesday the Curtis' resignation would follow \"the course of principles and political accountability.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSaturday's protesters had taken to the streets in protest against the UN proposal that they say fails to give them the independence they want, while offering too many concessions to minority Serbs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposal - which must be approved by the UN Security Council to take effect - envisages self-rule for Kosovo, including a flag, anthem, army, constitution and the right to join international organisations. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also gives minority Serbs more control over their own local governance.\u003cbr/\u003eSerbia lost control over Kosovo in 1999 when NATO bombing halted a Serb crackdown on the ethnic Albanian separatists and turned the province into a UN protectorate. \u003cbr/\u003eBelgrade has offered broad autonomy for the province, which it considers the medieval cradle of its statehood, but
