bouts of depression and sleeplessness, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).\u003cbr/\u003eSome experts are recommending light-therapy to help fight the 'winter blues'.\u003cbr/\u003eLife in the Arctic's dark winter months can have its toll on the human body.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the height of the winter season in Lapland the sun rises at around 10 am (local) and sets at 2 pm.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom freezing temperatures to lack of sunlight, new residents can find it hard to settle into this strange routine. \u003cbr/\u003eFabiana, an exchange student from Italy, says the few hours of sunlight every day are particularly difficult to cope with.\u003cbr/\u003eFor some these few hours of sunlight can cause depression and sleeplessness.\u003cbr/\u003eSome doctors describe these symptoms as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).\u003cbr/\u003eDr Antti Liikkanen is a psychiatrist working at the Rovaniemi hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says SAD is a deficiency of the hormone serotonin in the brain caused by too much dark or too much cold.\u003cbr/\u003eSerotonin is known to affect the mood, emotions and appetite. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Liikkanen says those suffering from lack of serotonin are often irritable and constantly tired.\u003cbr/\u003eSAD sufferers can be treated with a combination of antidepressant drugs, counselling or light therapy, according to Dr Liikkanen.\u003cbr/\u003eLight therapy, says Dr Liikkanen, can encourage the brain to produce more serotonin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe results can be seen in the space of a few days, according to Dr Liikkanen.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the small town of Rovaniemi a number of shops specialise in selling bright-lights that can help in countering the effects of SAD.\u003cbr/\u003eMervi Harkonen is a sales assistant who specialises in 'well-being' products.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says bright-lights are not like ordinary lamps, they are flicker free so as not to cause irritation to the eyes.\u003cbr/\u003eHarkonen says people buy the lamps because they feel constantly tired during the dark winter months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lights retail at around EUR 100 ($146 US Dollars), and can vary considerably in intensity of the light they produce.\u003cbr/\u003eOne woman who has become a regular user of bright-lights is Eeva Teranen.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she bought the lamp after feeling constantly tired because of the lack of sun light.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Teranen says she uses the light in the morning for half an hour.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that it helps her to wake up properly and feels much more energised.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite some people suffering from the lack of light during the dark winter months, many others seem happy enough. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United
