\u003cbr/\u003eThe reported number of cases grew to more than 183,000 in 2006, up from 144,000 at the end of last year, the China Daily newspaper reported, citing figures from the Ministry of Health.\u003cbr/\u003eOf the reported cases, more than 40,000 have developed into AIDS, it said.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of 2005, China and the UN estimated there were a total of 650,000 HIV cases in the country, including those that were unreported.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Chinese experts, up to 45 percent of people infected with HIV are from China's vast rural areas, most of them poor farmers who were infected by tainted needles during blood donation or unprotected sex.\u003cbr/\u003eWenlou village in the central province of Henan has been hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.\u003cbr/\u003eA tide of AIDS deaths engulfed rural Henan from the 1990s.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil four years ago, thousands of infected farmers in Henan died in agony, lacking all but the crudest care as province officials refused to acknowledge the epidemic. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao visited the village and brought it into the spotlight.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spread of HIV/AIDS has also affected many migrant workers in China's urban areas. \u003cbr/\u003eThese migrant workers had little education and little access HIV/AIDS information including ways to prevent it, such as
