Wide of people looking at sand art in front of church\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mexico's restive southern city, Oaxaca, people remained deeply divided on Wednesday between protesters demanding that their state governor resign and others urging calm so that life can return to normality and business and tourism can resume. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city faced worsening economic problems from the five-month-long takeover of the city by leftist protesters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe violence has killed at least 8 people and led the US embassy to warn Americans against travelling to the state.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the conflict has quieted somewhat three days after federal police retook the centre, the dispute seems far from resolved. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Oaxaca, protesters erected altars to those killed during the conflict. One altar bore a picture of Bradley Roland Will, a 36 year old American, who was an independent journalist and activist. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was killed on Friday - a death protesters blame on local officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe altar was decorated with fruit, bread and flowers, which Mexicans give as offerings to dead relatives and friends. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, police officers wielding riot shields remained posted in Oaxaca City's arch-ringed main square, the Zocalo, while protesters maintained barricades in other parts of the city. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Mexico's traditional Day of the Dead holiday, protesters stayed true to Oaxaca's artistic roots, blocking some of the capital's streets with huge, coloured-sand tapestries in the shape of skulls and skeletons instead of the sticks, rocks and burning vehicles previously used.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico from the eve of October 31st to November 2nd. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to tradition, it is the day when the spirits of the deceased are allowed to return to earth to visit their loved ones. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists normally flock to the area to see graves decorated with patterned tapestries of flower petals or brightly coloured sand. But this year, most tourists stayed away.  \u003cbr/\u003eDemonstrators also held rallies outside Oaxaca, in Mexico City and the southern state of Chiapas, in support of the protesters' demand for the resignation of Oaxaca state Governor Ulises Ruiz, whom they accuse of rigging the 2004 elections and using violence to repress opposition.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
