Wide of statue \u003cbr/\u003eA new art museum opening in Sofia symbolizes Bulgaria''s long and painful farewell to its totalitarian past.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of paintings and statues from the Communist era - which had been gathering dust in cellars - are now being restored for a place in their new home.\u003cbr/\u003eGiant statues of Soviet dictators Vladimir Lenin and local Bulgarian socialists Georgi Dimitrov and Todor Zhivkov.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are some of the works being exhibited at a new museum to remind Bulgarians of their totalitarian past.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were removed after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 - an event that triggered a political tsunami through Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe sweeping away landmark symbols of the communist regimes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while Budapest, Berlin and Prague opened similar expositions years ago, it took Bulgaria more than two decades to put together a collection of totalitarian art.\u003cbr/\u003eThis giant red star being lifted into its new home outside the museum has deep symbolism.\u003cbr/\u003eThis same star was removed from the roof of the Bulgarian communist party headquarters 21 years ago following collapse of the communist regime.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then the ornamental red star has gathered dust in the back of a public bath, where it was being stored.\u003cbr/\u003eRetrieved from cellars and warehouses, more than 100 artworks will be put on display in a museum, that''s due to open next month in Sofia''s Izgrev suburb.\u003cbr/\u003eIt aims to shed light on a period of Bulgaria''s history when art had to be created in line with strict ideological rules.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the statues need a lot of work to make them presentable. \u003cbr/\u003eScultpor, Ivan Nenkov, says: \"At this moment we are restoring some of the sculptures for Museum of Socialist Art, the most damaged are Georgi Dimitrov (founder of Bulgarian communist party) and Lenin.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlong with the statues and busts made out of bronze and stone, there are also oil paintings exalting the supposed \"eternal friendship\" between Bulgaria and the Soviet Union on display in the 7,500 sq. meter (80,700 sq. feet) museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bulgarian government has invested ï¿½1.5 million (USD $2.1 million) in the museum.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the project had been presented for months as a \"Museum of Totalitarian Art,\" ahead of the its launch the name changed to the \"Museum of Socialist Art.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBisera Josifova, the museum''s curator, says: \"Without getting too deep into politics or getting too emotional, we have to approach this period professionally. It''s not a standalone history and can''t be called totalitarian. I agree with my colleagues, including the Minister of Culture (Vezdy Rashidov) to accept the name of this museumï¿½The Museum of Socialist Art.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAsked about the reason for renaming the museum, Yosifova warned of \"emotional extremism\" when evaluating the past, and argued that the exposition contains valuable artifacts by the best known painters and sculptors of their time.\u003cbr/\u003eBulgaria was once one of the most loyal of the Soviet''s allies\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, the country has had more problems than other former communist states in reconciling with its past, although several reformist governments have vowed to clean up the remains of communism.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Czech Republic, a former labour camp for political prisoners has been turned into a museum. \u003cbr/\u003eThe museum is located near the former uranium mines south of Prague where prisoners were forced to work under the communist regime.\u003cbr/\u003ePrague''s Museum of Communism, a private institution which mostly focuses on the daily life, also has some art pieces, propaganda posters and such on display.\u003cbr/\u003eBudapest has its Memento Park, set up some 15 years ago, where many of the communist-era statues which used to adorn local parks have been placed. The park is a tribute to Hungary''s political struggles, from the Soviet takeover in 1949 to the Freedom Fighters'' protests against Communism in 1956, which were ultimately crushed, to the fall of communism in 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the other side of the Danube River in the Hungarian capital, is the House of Terror. The museum is located in a building used as a headquarters and prison by the Nazis and the communists. Hundreds of Jews and anti-Communists were killed in its basement.\u003cbr/\u003eBut although there are other socialist museums around central Europe, its curator believes Bulgaria''s museum offers something new.\u003cbr/\u003eJosifova says: \"There are other such museums in Europe, but they are with completely different personalities. In Hungary such a museum is called the Museum of Terror. I keep saying, that especially for Bulgaria \"totalitarian\" is not corresponding to the nature, subject and the concept of our museum. The most visible is the monument of the Soviet Army, opposite the Sofia University, commemorating its WWII victory and the supposed \"eternal friendship\" between Bulgarians and
