Various of photocopies of the book\u003cbr/\u003eThousands took part in an annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong on Friday to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong residents took advantage of the freedom of speech in this former British colony, but in mainland China security forces were on alert for any attempts to commemorate the anniversary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd at Hong Kong's Victoria Park was large enough to fill six football pitches, though were no official estimates.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocracy activists laid a wreath at a makeshift monument dedicated to the Tiananmen victims, bowing three times in line with traditional Chinese mourning customs.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's government has never fully disclosed what happened when the military crushed the weeks-long, student-led protests on the night of June\u003cbr/\u003e3-4, 1989, killing hundreds or possibly more people. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has long maintained that the protests were a \"counterrevolutionary riot.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman reiterated the government's position on the 1989 protests.\u003cbr/\u003ePublic discussion of the events or any displays referencing them remain forbidden on the mainland.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Hong Kong, public awareness of this year's anniversary has been high because of perceived restrictions on mourning activities in the former\u003cbr/\u003eBritish colony that is promised freedom of speech. \u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong police confiscated a large statue dedicated to the Tiananmen victims last Saturday - they released it on Tuesday - and a local university banned students from placing it on their campus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe territory's leading English-language newspaper, the South China Morning Post, urged Beijing to reconsider its position on the 1989 protests\u003cbr/\u003ein an editorial Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, a memoir purportedly written by China's hardline premier at the time of the Tiananmen Square democracy crackdown in 1989, defending the military suppression, is being published in Hong Kong later this month.\u003cbr/\u003eParts of it appeared in Hong Kong media in the run-up to Friday's anniversary of the 1989 suppression.\u003cbr/\u003eThe memoir says soldiers acted in self-defence when they fired on citizens.\u003cbr/\u003eIf verified as authentic, the book would be one of the few insider accounts of the cataclysmic events that split the communist leadership and\u003cbr/\u003eremain a tragic grievance for some Chinese 21 years later. \u003cbr/\u003eIt would also be the first detailed account from then-Premier Li Peng, who sided with Communist Party elders against reformist leaders in supporting the crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the memoir, Li says he was at Zhongnanhai, the high-walled headquarters for party leaders west of Tiananmen Square, when the crackdown unfolded late on June 3 to the early hours of June 4. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople's Liberation Army soldiers moved toward the square from various parts of the city and were \"blocked and attacked by organised rioters.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the armed rioters who first opened fire at the military, burning military vehicles and brutally beating, burning and killing the warriors. When the PLA was forced to return fire in self-defence, both sides sustained casualties,\" the book says, according to an excerpt provided by Hong Kong's\u003cbr/\u003eNew Century Press.\u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong media have published other excerpts of \"The Tiananmen Diary of Li Peng\" and among the revelations is a tally of the crackdown's casualties - 313 dead, including 42 students and 23 soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This kind of first person records are fundamentals to history research,\" said editor Bao Pu.\u003cbr/\u003eA previous insider account that surfaced a decade ago, \"The Tiananmen Papers,\" was purported to be a compilation of official documents smuggled out of China by someone who worked for the leadership. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year came the posthumous memoirs of party General Secretary Zhao Ziyang, the liberal reformer who was purged for opposing the clampdown and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.\u003cbr/\u003eBao also edited Zhao's memoir, his father having been a key lieutenant of the reformist leader.\u003cbr/\u003eWhether Li Peng's memoir is truly his, however, is uncertain. \u003cbr/\u003eBao said he was given a photocopy of the typed transcript earlier this year by a stranger who would not explain how it came into his possession.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Information Office of China's Cabinet, the State Council, did not
