Pull out painting by Wassily Kandinsky, \"Studie zu Improvisation 3\"\u003cbr/\u003e2008 was a creative and profitable year in the art world, with a series of record breaking sales. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as the year drew to a close the credit crunch finally began to impact sales. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sagging demand for high-end art at the autumn auctions could signal a return to saner prices in the fine art market in 2009 after the frenzied buying of the last few years. \u003cbr/\u003eA quartet of 'bad boys' of modern and contemporary art were recurring figures on the International art scene in 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eWarhol, Bacon, Bansky and Hirst dominated the art headlines for much of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eIn February a sale of paintings by some of the world's best known modern artists took place at Sotheby's in London. \u003cbr/\u003eAlexander Branczik, deputy director Sotheby's, says that Warhol constantly used his own face \"as a way of documenting his own time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe three paintings were placed together on the eve of Warhol's death, according to Branczik.\u003cbr/\u003eThe triptych fetched around ï¿½11 million pounds (ï¿½11,444,500 / $17,059,595).  \u003cbr/\u003eThe self portraits are painted in red, white, and blue - thought to resemble the stars and stripes on the American flag.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso attracting attention at the same sale were two works by British-based graffiti artist Banksy.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the works features two life-sized policemen with yellow smiling faces.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other painting by Banksy is from a series entitled 'Corrupt Oils'.\u003cbr/\u003eThe painting features Leonardo Da Vinci's famous 'Mona Lisa' holding a gun.\u003cbr/\u003eOverall Banksy sales generated ï¿½1,178,500 ($1,756,649) at the sale, and Warhol sales totalled ï¿½16,312,300($24,333,172). \u003cbr/\u003eThe Mona Lisa also provided inspiration for a hologram video artist in South Korea. \u003cbr/\u003eThe world's most famous portrait speaks to visitors and tells them her story. \u003cbr/\u003eThe event at the Alive Gallery in Seoul was the first  exhibition is the first in the world to combine works of art with 3D, hologram and voice recognition technology. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result enables visitors to have virtual conversations with ancient masterpieces and their creators. \u003cbr/\u003eMichelangelo is on hand to explain how he created  \"The Last Judgment\" while Jesus and his Disciples chat among themselves at \"The Last Supper\". \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile in Beijing artist and printmaker Su Xinping is hard at work in his studio. \u003cbr/\u003eBorn in Jining, Inner Mongolia, in 1960, Xinping served in the army for two years from 1977-79, before graduating from the Tianjin Institute of Fine Arts in 1983.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1989, he got a masters degree in printmaking from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), where he is currently a Deputy Professor and Deputy Head of Printmaking.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe has featured in exhibitions all over the world and his work can be seen at the British Museum in London, as well as in galleries and museums in Australia, Japan, Germany, Finland and the U.S.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Dutch capital was illuminated with a series of light sculptures this summer. \u003cbr/\u003eThe artist Ryoji Ikeda is one of Japan's leading electronic composers, whose normal materials are the minutiae of ultrasonics, frequencies and the essential characteristics of sound itself. \u003cbr/\u003eIkeda says that he has taken those principals of sound and applied them to light. \u003cbr/\u003eIkeda's work was commissioned by the city of Amsterdam as part of the Dream Amsterdan event in June. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was his most ambitious large-scale site-specific light installation to date.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother large scale outdoor art installation began to flow under New York's Brooklyn bridge in the same month. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Waterfalls\" as the project is known is the latest large scale brain child of artist Olafur Eliasson.\u003cbr/\u003eThe installation featured four mammoth purpose-built waterfalls emptying into the East River and the New York Harbour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe New York City Waterfalls flowed from June to 13 October, 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eThe strange world of Francis Bacon, one of the world's most significant and celebrated artists, is currently on show in London. \u003cbr/\u003eTate Britain in London is hosting this major retrospective of his work ahead of the artist's upcoming centenary in 2009 (September 11 2008 - January 4, 2009). \u003cbr/\u003eBacon was born in Dublin in 1909 and died in Madrid in 1992, aged 82. \u003cbr/\u003eExhibition highlights include his infamous portraits of Pope Innocent X and celebrated triptychs such as Three Studies for a Crucifixion, 1962. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, Bacon is widely acknowledged as one of the most prominent artists of 20th-century art, with works such as his Triptych, 1976 selling for $86 million USD at auction, which is a record-breaking figure for a post-war work of art.\u003cbr/\u003eBacon influenced many younger artists, including Lucien Freud, who shares a penchant for painting bruised and mottled flesh, and Damien Hirst, whose pickled sharks and rotting cows' heads show a similar fascination with corporeal decay.\u003cbr/\u003eHirst, a multimillionaire Brit art star, who reportedly spent US$33 million last year on a Bacon self-portrait, says the older man was \"a hero\" when he was starting out as an artist.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter London, the exhibition will then go to Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid from 3 February - 19 April 2009 and then on to the US to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York from 18 May - 16 August 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eA September sale of pickled sharks, butterfly paintings and other pieces by provocative artist Damien Hirst raised $198 million, silencing his doubters and defying the global economic gloom.  \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's auction house said the total for the two-day sale was a record for an auction of works by a single artist.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe turmoil engulfing global financial markets did nothing to dampen prices as more than 600 prospective buyers packed the showroom for each of the three auction sessions. \u003cbr/\u003eLouisa Buck the contemporary Arts Correspondent, The Art Newspaper said that in September the recession had yet to impact the art market. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The art market doesn't seem to be that bothered by the credit crunch, you know. So you have new money from Russia, you have new money from the Middle East, you have new money, new buyers coming to buy the works and I think they are the people who are going to be looking hard and waving their paddles at this auction here.\"\u003cbr/\u003eArt world observers have been predicting a crash since the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis began rippling around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the buyers driving the art world sales frenzy were hedge fund and private equity millionaires among the first to suffer as the credit crunch took hold.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut prices mainly stayed high, thanks in part to Russian and Middle Eastern buyers who were insulated from the worst of the economic woes.  \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's auction of works by Hirst defied market jitters by generating almost $200 million in September. \u003cbr/\u003e \"The Golden Calf\" an embalmed calf with golden hooves and horns fetched $18.5 million.  \u003cbr/\u003eTwo of Hirst's butterfly paintings were sold for charity, for a total of more than $2.9 million. \u003cbr/\u003eAll prices include a buyer's premium.  \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's said the total smashed the $20 million record for an auction of works of a single artist set in 1993 for 88 works by Pablo Picasso. \u003cbr/\u003eHirst's butterflies also featured in an art fair in New Delhi in August. \u003cbr/\u003eThe best and the latest of Indian modern and contemporary art was on display at the first India Art Summit held in New Delhi (August 22-24, 2008). \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the organisers, the Indian art market is currently worth Rs 15 billion ($348 million approx) with an annual growth rate of 30-35 per cent.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian art market has gone up by 485 per cent in the last decade making it the fourth most buoyant in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eLaura Williams of UK-based Art 18/21 said the Indian art scene may have taken time to catch up but after China, India is the new destination for international collectors. \u003cbr/\u003eNothing symbolised the modern art boom like the London Frieze in October. \u003cbr/\u003eFour days of champagne, celebrity and, of course, art this event has become one of the world's most glamorous art fairs since it was founded six years ago.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe glitter quotient remained high this year, as everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow and Sofia Coppola to Abramovich and his gallery-owning girlfriend Daria Zhukova came to inspect the work of 1,000 international artists in a tented mini-city erected in London's Regent's Park.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe fair did not release sales totals, but said the figures had \"exceeded expectations.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eBut attendees said the mood was less frenzied than in recent years, when many pieces were snapped up in the first few hours.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Frieze Art Fair ran from 16 October to 19 October 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever as the end of the year approached the credit crisis finally began to have a substantial effect on the art market. \u003cbr/\u003eThe New York Autumn auctions serve as a barometer of the art market because they attract buyers from all over the world.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt Christie's Auction House on November 7 of 82 pieces up for auction, 46 were sold in the Impressionist and Modern Art Sale.\u003cbr/\u003eSold items included Picasso's 1934 oil-on-canvas painting \"Deux personnages (Marie-Therese et sa soeur lisant)\" (\"Two figures (Marie-Therese and her sister reading)\"). \u003cbr/\u003eIt fetched $18 million, in line with its pre-auction estimate. \u003cbr/\u003eWassily Kandinsky's 1909 \"Studie zu Improvisation 3\" (\"Study of Improvisation 3\"), an oil and gouache on board in the artist's painted frame, was auctioned for $16.9 million. \u003cbr/\u003eIts presale estimate was $15 million to $20 million.  \u003cbr/\u003eHowever for the two-week autumn auction period in November, Sotheby's reported taking in a total of $411.5 million, under its low estimate of $688.4 million, and selling 448 lots out of 866. \u003cbr/\u003eChristie's reported a total of $374.5 million, below its $686.7 million low estimate. It sold 630 items out of 990.  \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's auction house says the company has approved a restructuring plan which will result in salary reductions and layoffs, due to lower-than-expected earnings.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is unclear how many people are losing their jobs. New York-based Sotheby's says the plan will affect its North American operations, which employs 605 people.\u003cbr/\u003eIts rival, Christie's, say it too is reviewing its strategic plan \"in light of the current global economic environment and our sale results for this autumn.\"  Christie's say it expects the reorganisation to lead to
