Wide of bullfighters being carried by fans\u003cbr/\u003eProtest for and against bull fighting took place outside Barcelona''s historic bull fighting arena on Saturday, as one of the last bull fights took place there, following a ban on the blood sport across the autonomous region of Catalonia.\u003cbr/\u003eTop flight bullfighters are on the bill on both Saturday and Sunday at the La Monumental arena in the city of Barcelona. \u003cbr/\u003eCatalonia is one of the first Spanish autonomous region to ban bullfighting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ban on the sport takes effect January 1, 2012 but this is the last weekend of events of the 2011 season in the Catalan capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish public is deeply divided over the bullfight, some claim it is a deep-rooted cultural heritage, others think it is a barbaric blood sport with no place in a civilised democracy.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing years of debate and nationwide political unrest, on 28 July 2010 the local parliament thrust a sword deep into this centuries-old Spanish tradition. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ban was initiated by animal rights groups, who want to extend the ban, though there is no significant national movement to do away with bullfighting in the rest of Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eAnti-bullfight campaigner Lluis Villacorta has spent the past seven years protesting in front of the arena with his face painted blood red.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was pleased the ban was coming into effect.\u003cbr/\u003e\"On one side I feel very happy.
