Wide shot Eilat\u003cbr/\u003eConservationists have launched a campaign to save Eilat's embattled coral reefs - the 'rainforests of the sea' - which environmentalists claim are facing extinction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world-famous reefs around the popular Red Sea resort are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to half the planet's fish species.\u003cbr/\u003eCampaigners say the reefs are dying off due to a combination of climate change and pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eTo survive, the reefs depend on a symbiotic relationship between the coral tissue and the single-celled algae harboured in the tissue.\u003cbr/\u003eThis symbiosis can only be effective when enough light reaches the coral so the reefs only thrive in relatively clear, clean water.\u003cbr/\u003eConservationists from non-government organisation (NGO) Zalul (Clear) say the reefs may disappear if drastic steps are not taken immediately.\u003cbr/\u003eIt blames widespread pollution for the crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eZalul says that one of the major causes is fish farming in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eZalul claims that effluent and food surplus from the caged fish are comparable to the sewage produced by a town of 30-thousand people and have led to a rise in the amount of nutrients in the water resulting in 'dead zones' around the cages.\u003cbr/\u003eFish farmers vehemently deny the claim, saying they have scientific evidence to support their case.\u003cbr/\u003eZalul also blame sporadic sewage leaks, and spills of industrial fertilizer from factories that have sprung up along the coast.\u003cbr/\u003eZalul say that unless drastic action is taken immediately, the reefs and the diverse life they support could disappear.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is calling on the government to designate the area a nature reserve, remove the fish cages and create tighter pollution monitoring controls.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
