which include a $23 billion batch of Social Security payments set to go.\u003cbr/\u003eMajor rating agencies such as Moody's and Standard and Poor's have signalled they're poised to lower the nation's coveted Triple-A credit ratings if no agreement is reached on the nation's debt. \u003cbr/\u003eOn July 18th, Moody's issued a report suggesting that the US could eliminate the threat to its credit rating by removing the legal limit on the debt.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 2nd the US has avoided a feared and catastrophic default on its debt, after lawmakers passed a measure that ties an agreement to raise the government's capacity to borrow to steep cuts in government spending.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Senate passed the measure a day after it passed the House of Representatives, and President Barack Obama quickly signed it into law.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite weeks of highly partisan and often contentious debate, the vote wasn't even close.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt passed the Senate 74 to 26.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe vote capped an extraordinarily difficult Washington battle, pitting tea party Republican forces in the House against Obama and Democrats controlling the Senate. \u003cbr/\u003eThe compromise bill paired an increase in the debt ceiling with promises of more than two (t) trillion dollars of budget cuts over the next decade.\u003cbr/\u003eA deeply frustrated President Barack Obama, while praising Congress for finally passing the compromise bill, demanded legislators immediately turn their attention to fixing the economy and creating jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking afterwards in the Rose Garden, Obama called the bill's passage \"an important first step to ensuring that as a nation we live within our means.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe measure would provide an immediate 400 (b) billion US dollar increase in the 14.3 (t) trillion US borrowing cap, with 500 (b) billion more assured this autumn. \u003cbr/\u003eThat 900 (b) billion would be matched by cuts to agency budgets over the next 10 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bill sets up a drama for the autumn that promises to again test the ability of Obama and Republicans to work cooperatively.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt establishes a special bipartisan committee to draft legislation to find up to 1.5 (t) trillion US dollars more in deficit cuts for a vote later this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's no guarantee the committee, to be evenly split between the warring parties, will agree on such legislation. \u003cbr/\u003eBut there are powerful incentives to do so because more budget gridlock would trigger a crippling round of automatic cuts across much of the budget, including Pentagon coffers.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 27th jurors at the trial of the doctor accused of killing Michael Jackson heard the pop star's slurred words while he was on a powerful anaesthetic, caught on tape weeks before his death.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his opening statement before the court, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said Jackson trusted Dr. Conrad Murray as his physician. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That misplaced trust in Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life,\" Walgren told the jury. \u003cbr/\u003eThe jury also saw a photo of Jackson's pale body lying on a gurney after he died from an overdose of a powerful anaesthetic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sounds and images were just part of the multimedia presentation that prosecutors presented during opening statements at the involuntary manslaughter trial of Murray.\u003cbr/\u003eWalgren described Jackson as \"highly under the influence\" when speaking with Murray in May 2009. \u003cbr/\u003eThe singer is heard slurring his words and barely audible, talking about his forthcoming concerts.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When people leave my show, I want them to say, 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life,\" the voice on the recording says. \u003cbr/\u003eOn June 25th 2009, Jackson died of an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol. \u003cbr/\u003eWalgren accused Murray of abandoning Jackson.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He left this vulnerable man filled with valium, midazolam and loreazepam and proprofol with no medical monitoring equipment, no necessary resuscitative equipment,\" Walgren told jurors.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of Jackson's family members attended the hearing, including his father Joseph, mother Katherine, sisters LaToya and Janet, and brothers Jermaine, Randy and Tito. \u003cbr/\u003eMurray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and he and his attorneys have denied he gave anything to Jackson that could have killed the pop star.\u003cbr/\u003eUS -
