She was orphaned as a cub in Point Lay, Alaska, when her mother was shot by a subsistence hunter.
She had charged the hunter, who shot her in self defence.
The hunter noticed upon inspection that it was a lactating female, and he followed the mother bear's tracks back to the den, where he found and rescued the cub.
She is one of 9 polar bears that were rescued by the zoo.
Ahpun has a younger companion at the zoo.
Lyutyik (LOO'-tik) seen dancing at the fence, was born in the Leningrad Zoo in St. Petersburg, Russia.
When he was a cub, he and a sister were sent to Sea World in Australia. He was then transferred on to Alaska to be a companion for Ahpun.
Ahpun and Lyutyik have been mating, but they have yet to produce a cub - mainly because Ahpun had been on birth control.
But officials have seen increased breeding activity between the two, and are hopeful a cub will now be forthcoming.
The zoo is at the forefront of polar bear conservation, and is the holding centre for Alaska's abandoned cubs.
"So, for years, we've been the holding facility, sometimes permanent, sometime temporary for orphaned cubs coming in, whether their parents were killed or they got separated in a storm," says Patrick Lampi, the Alaska Zoo's executive director.
It has helped care for more than 50 of the three bears species found in Alaska, polar, brown and black.
The Federal Wildlife Service then determines when and where the polar bear is placed.
There are about 20,000 polar bears worldwide.
Alaska has two distinct populations. There are about 1,500 on the Beaufort Sea, on Alaska's northern coast, and an undetermined amount of bears in the Bering and Chukchi (CHUCK'-chee) Sea area.
If a polar bear cub becomes orphaned because its parents were killed or it became separated in a storm, the Fish and Wildlife Service will determine whether it's picked up. If it is, that means the cub will never go back into the wild.
The cub's first stop would then be Anchorage zoo, where its health is monitored. The federal agency then consults with the American Zoological Association to determine where it will be placed.
"It got to the point where they have to be brought in, they take so much time to get up to an adequate size to survive in the wild, but without spending those three critical years with their mother, learning how to survive, they would just never make it again back in the wild. Their only option is to become ambassadors for their species at zoological parks and conservation areas," says Lampi.
The zoo is also currently involved in four polar bear research projects with researchers around the country.
Climate change will affect polar bears in the future, but no one is quite certain how that will happen.
There is less sea ice and that means bears will spend more time on land, where they might be drawn to a whale bone pile at an Alaska Native village. Alaska Natives can legally hunt whale, and sometimes they pile what is not used from a catch on the outskirts of town.
That attracts hungry bears, and could lead to more human-polar bear encounters.
So could increased tourism in northern Alaska, where some cruise ships are now sailing because of diminished ice.
Wildlife Biologist, Susi Miller says there has been an increase in polar bears coming on shore in the past 20 years.
Those bears that do come to shore tend to stay there until the ice freezes up again in the middle of October.
The bears are attracted to the indigenous communities that fish and go whaling.
And tourists are also interested in seeing the way of life in the Alaska Native villages, and the clash of tourism and bears can lead to conflict, says Miller.
"And so in a couple of communities, we are seeing quite a bit of tourism really expanding. It is a concern because any time that you get a large number of people, especially ones inexperienced with bears around, and a large number of polar bears, the potential for conflict increases."
Encounters between the two species is leading to more orphaned animals.
To accommodate more orphaned bears, Alaska Zoo is expanding its polar exhibit and facility to care for polar bears that are brought to Anchorage.
The $8 million USD project will be built in two phases. The first phase is nearing its funding goal, and will include building a Polar Bear Transition Centre.
The second phase of the project will be to expand the exhibit area, which includes a yard and a pool, and building an elevated public viewing area.
AP Television
Anchorage, Alaska - 23 April, 2014
1.
