Wide of protesters singing national anthem\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of protesters took to the streets of the Argentine capital on Wednesday to oppose plans to nationalise some 23 (b) billion US dollars in private pension fund assets to protect retirement money from the global financial crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's legislative body will begin debating the measure on Thursday and a decision is expected within days.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment officials are confident they have enough votes to get the project through Congress and into the Senate.\u003cbr/\u003eAmongst the protesters were members of the opposition and other social organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentine President Cristina Fernandez has said she is required by the constitution to guarantee pensions. \u003cbr/\u003eBut critics suspect the government is more concerned about replacing falling tax revenues than protecting retirees.\u003cbr/\u003eSome protesters accused Fernandez of \"looting.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe nationalisation would provide the government with enough cash to pay off (m) millions in debt and finance infrastructure projects starved of credit.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Argentine governments have had a mixed record in managing pensions.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Argentines were allowed to switch between private and public pension funds last year, only 20 percent opted for the government's plan.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout one-quarter of Argentina's 40 (m) million citizens are affiliated with the private funds, paying in 4.6 (m) million US dollars a year.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentina is one of the world's top five exporters of soy, corn, wheat and beef, and falling prices for these commodities prices worldwide have reduced an important source of government revenue.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the same time, the country has struggled to access international credit, even before the world financial crisis hit, with 12 (b) billion US dollars in debt payments due in 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentina effectively has been banished from the international debt market since defaulting on 95 (b) billion US dollar bonds in 2001, the largest sovereign default in history.\u003cbr/\u003ePension funds are in trouble around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentina's private accounts were created in 1994 under President Carlos Menem, who embarked on a wave of privatisation in Argentina during his 1989-1999
