Various Kidman talking to people at the event\u003cbr/\u003eNICOLE KIDMAN and director SYDNEY POLLACK were guests of honour at the United Nations headquarters in New York Monday (26APR04), at a gala reception to celebrate the first movie ever to be filmed on UN premises.\u003cbr/\u003eKidman and Pollack are making a thriller about political intrigue, deception and murder plots, 'THE INTERPRETER.' They have been shooting scenes at the U.N compound for the past seven weekends, with another seven left to go - working around restrictions that forbid filming during the working week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Academy Award winning Kidman told reporters: \"It's an honour actually to be shooting here, we shoot on the weekends, so that everything can still get done in the week.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe star plays The Interpreter of the film's title, who overhears an assassination plot against the leader of her fictitious African country.  She tries to convince a sceptical FBI agent (played by fellow Oscar winner Sean Penn) and becomes a target herself.\u003cbr/\u003eKidman met dozens of real U.N. ambassadors at the jam-packed reception  in the visitors' lobby of U.N. headquarters. The star has already spent time with real U.N interpreters to prepare for her role.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well obviously the character I am playing is an interpreter so I have done a lot of research, so yeah, it's a difficult job, but it is an important job,\" said Kidman.\u003cbr/\u003eUp until now, the UN has always refused Hollywood permission to film on its premises.\u003cbr/\u003eA request from Alfred Hitchcock was turned down, preventing him from filming a scene for 'North by Northwest' in the late 1950s - the UN said it didn't want to be part of a movie that depicted the assassination of a diplomat in a U.N lounge.\u003cbr/\u003ePollack's request was also turned down at first, by the U.N's legal department. But U.N Communications Director Shashi Tharoor persuaded Secretary General Kofi Annan of the merits of allowing Hollywood access to the HQ.\u003cbr/\u003eTharoor said, \"People will go to see a film, a thriller by Sydney Pollack starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn and suddenly without even having thought about the UN they will get a sense of the UN that it is as real and alive as the organisation, where important issues of war and peace and where human destiny is decided where real people who happen to look like Nicole Kidman happen to be working in it - and what could be better.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince filming began scores of extras have surrounded the U.N compound as part of a protest scene and motorcade scene.  \u003cbr/\u003ePollack thanked UN workers for their body for costs incurred during filming and has pledged to make an appropriate donation to a U.N cause.\u003cbr/\u003e'The Interpreter' is due for release early in
