Wide of bullets hitting the sea\u003cbr/\u003eA delivery of UN World Food Programme aid bound for Somalia is being escorted by a Dutch naval ship to protect it from pirates.\u003cbr/\u003eDutch special forces have been preparing for a possible attack on board the warship Ruyter as it escorts the Ibn Batouta, which is carrying 7,000 tons of food aid to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the Ruyter's commanders said that while they \"haven't had any problem\" with pirates yet, they are \"always prepared for them to come aboard\".\u003cbr/\u003eRampant piracy and attacks upon aid workers have left the impoverished Horn of Africa nation in dire need of humanitarian aid.\u003cbr/\u003eRecent ship hijackings in the Gulf of Aden have been particularly brazen with one ship laden with tanks, and another carrying an estimated 100 million US dollars worth of Saudi crude oil being taken.\u003cbr/\u003eA senior shipping officer at the World Food Programme, said the agency has delivered 50-thousand tons of food aid to Somalia by ship in the last month. \u003cbr/\u003eHe estimated it took about 10 ships to deliver the food.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ruyter and the WFP vessel both set off from the Kenyan port of Mombasa, but the Dutch warship will anchor out at sea off the Somali coast as smaller skiffs escort the food to Mogadishu.\u003cbr/\u003eSomalia has been without an effective government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a dictatorship and then turned on one another. \u003cbr/\u003eThe lawlessness has allowed piracy to flourish off the coast, with bandits in speed boats launching attacks on foreign shipping, bringing in about 30 (m) million in ransoms this year alone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country is also battling a ferocious Islamic insurgency. \u003cbr/\u003eCivilians have taken the brunt of the violence surrounding the insurgency, with thousands killed or maimed by mortar shells, machine-gun crossfire and grenades.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN says there are around 300-thousand acutely malnourished children in Somalia, but attacks and kidnappings of aid workers have shut down many humanitarian
