Exterior shot of power plant
People in Iceland enjoy an abundant supply of cheap energy generated by geothermal power plants.
But now Icelanders are being warned to cut back on the use of geothermal water.
The government is looking to the hydropower and geothermal energy industries to help carry it through the credit crunch and back to growth.
And it says Icelanders can no longer take this seemingly endless resource for granted.
As its name suggests, Iceland is a land of glaciers - they cover about 11% of this remote island nation.
Snow and ice are melting continuously.
Water streaming down to the ocean shapes the landscape creating some of the world's most beautiful waterfalls.
With a population of just 320,000 people, Iceland sits between the North Atlantic Ocean and Greenland Sea mid way between Europe and Canada.
It's location at one of the earth's major fault lines - the mid-Atlantic ridge - creates stunning and unique scenery, with lava-strewn flatlands, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and hot springs.
Iceland's abundance of rivers and glaciers are used to generate 80% of the country's electricity.
Geothermal fields provide the remaining 20%.
Stefan Arnoldsson, a University of Iceland professor and one of the world's top experts in geothermal energy says
that almost ninety percent of the people of Iceland use geothermal hot water for heating their homes, but warns that the resource should not be taken for granted.
Energy is so cheap, that geothermal water is used to keep pavements and car parks snow-free in the winter.
It is also used in public bathing pools.
Blue Lagoon is Iceland's largest geothermal public bath.
Since it was opened in 1989 it has become one of the country's most important tourist spots.
Geothermal energy in Iceland happened by chance when at the turn of the last century a farmer seized the steam from a hot spring that ran below his farm to heat his house.
Four decades later the hot water was piped to houses and swimming pools all around the island.
It is also used as drinking water.
Hot water from the springs is cooled and pumped from boreholes into the taps of nearby homes.
Valdis Asta Adalsteinsdottir is from Reykjavik.
Married with two children she also works for the country's civil aviation authority.
Valdis says that during winter the family keep their heating system at 25 Celsius.
She thinks that Icelanders take water for granted, but she also considers her water to be the best in the world and encourages her sons to drink lots of it.
Her youngest son Gadi says that all the family take hour-long showers as well as long bubble baths.
However Iceland's Minister of Environment, Porunn Sveinbjarnardottir says Icelanders can no longer take unlimited use of geothermal water for granted.
Arni Vinsson is a member of the Icelandic Natural Conservation Association and a Greenpeace delegate.
He fears that continued abundant use of geothermal water may lead to Iceland running out of it for a few centuries which could result in great damage for the country's environment and economy.
Valgardur Lyngdal Jonsson works for Orkuveita Reykjavkur-Reykjavk Energy, Iceland's biggest energy company which runs the Hellisheidi power plant located at the centre of the country a hundred kilometres east of Reykjavik.
He describes geothermal energy as Iceland's oil, pointing out that without it, the country would have to import fossil fuels to satisfy energy needs.
The three operating turbines of Hellisheidi provide nearly half of Iceland's electricity.
He says completion of the plant is expected in two years time when it will house six turbines that will produce enough electricity to provide energy for the whole country.
Until recently Iceland was envied for its rapid generation of wealth in the finance sector despite its small stature on the world stage.
The stock market boom in the 90's led to an acquisition spree across Europe by cash-rich Icelandic banks and companies.
It allowed the country to shift from being a mainstay fishing industry to an international investment force.
But in 2008 Iceland saw its economy fall apart under the weight of the global credit crunch.
The country's banking system collapsed in October.
It's currency, the krona, has lost half its value since January.
Four Nordic countries and the International Monetary Fund recently pledged a combined $4.6 billion in loans to help Iceland's economy recover.
The country is also putting a lot of faith in its growing hydropower and geothermal energy industries to carry it through the credit squeeze and back to growth.
With its endless potential Iceland stands on the front line of renewable energy
