DC.\u003cbr/\u003eThe obelisk-shaped Dom Pedro blue-green crystal was mined in Brazil in the late 1980s and is named after the country's first two emperors.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was designed and cut by the renowned gem artist Bernd Munsteiner. \u003cbr/\u003eIt stands 36 centimetres tall (14 inches) and weighs 10,363 carets - or nearly 2.27 kilograms (5 pounds). \u003cbr/\u003eCuts in the reverse faces serve to reflect light within the gem.\u003cbr/\u003eNational Gem Collection Curator Jeffrey Post told AP Television he believes the gem will become one of the most memorable pieces in the museum's collection.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's difficult to place a value on the gem according to Post, although it was offered to the Smithsonian in the late 1990s for 7 to ten million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gem was donated to the museum for public display last year by Jane Mitchell and Jeffery Bland of Florida.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past the gem has been on temporary display at the Ecoles de Mines, a top gem school in Paris, and also in Houston, Palm Beach, Florida, and Germany. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now its permanent home will be the
