VS photocall Vivienne Westwood with punk rock images\u003cbr/\u003eVivienne Westwood, the doyen of British design famous for dressing the Sex Pistols and creating the 1970s punk look, Designer Vivienne Westwood launched a major retrospective of her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eOver an influential career spanning more than 30 years, Westwood has certainly has always been  a rebel against conformity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition shows her penchant for always staying one step ahead of the pack, from her early forays into fashion as one-half of a design duo with Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, through her first catwalk show - the romantic Pirate Collection in the early 1980s - to her recent revival of tartan and extravagant evening gowns.\u003cbr/\u003e The collection amassed by the museum features more than 150 designs, including a torn Union Jack T-shirt worn by Sex Pistols front man Johnny Rotten and the vertiginous mock-croc platform shoes that toppled Naomi Campbell at a catwalk show in 1993.\u003cbr/\u003eBorn in Glossopdale, northern England in 1942, as Vivienne Swire, she showed an early interest in fashion, customizing her school uniform to emulate the fashionable pencil skirt and making sleeveless shifts with a single seam and darts from exactly one yard of fabric.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it wasn't until after her first marriage, to Derek Westwood, and a fateful meeting with Malcolm McLaren that she began to take fashion seriously.\u003cbr/\u003eHer partnership with McLaren, both privately and professionally, led to the opening of her first shop - \"Let it Rock\" - on London's fashionable King's Road in 1971. The shop became the birthplace of punk when the duo gave it a makeover and renamed it \"Seditionaries - Clothes for Heroes\" in the mid-1970s.\u003cbr/\u003eThe subversive Seditionaries collection featured chicken bones on T-shirts spelling out \"Rock,\" bondage trousers, and copious amounts of leather, chains and badges. The pair were prosecuted under obscenity laws in 1975 for producing a T-shirt featuring two naked cowboys.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clothes became an intrinsic part of the era when, at their first concert, the Sex Pistols took to the stage in Westwood and McLaren designs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the look became adopted by the mainstream, Westwood turned her vision elsewhere.\u003cbr/\u003eShe began to study history for her collections and the King's Road shop was remodeled to resemble a lurching galleon. \"Pirate,\" the duo's first catwalk collection in 1981, showed clothes evoking highwaymen, dandies and buccaneers to a blast of cannon fire and rap music by McLaren.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was an immediate success, and Westwood dug deeper into history, often visiting the V\u0026amp;A's vast historical collection for inspiration.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the years, she has presented a revival of tweed and tartan, the return of the bustle - this time on miniskirts - and inspired a focus on traditional British tailoring.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight of her Anglomania collection in 1993 was a silk evening dress based on the eighteenth century artist Francois Boucher's portraits of Louis XV's mistress.\u003cbr/\u003eIn her most recent collection, Westwood has returned to free form cutting to create jersey bodysuits and sack dresses.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman who scandalized the aristocracy by turning up to Buckingham Palace to accept an honor from the queen wearing a see-through dress with no knickers now heads a lucrative fashion empire with stores in New York, Paris, Seoul, Moscow and Hong Kong.
