What he's done is he's looked at the process behind it, what he does with his work is always shift focus away from the object and to look at the creative act behind it. His work is involved with the transformation of materials, it's a sculptural act. So with his piece, he's highlighting the sort of craftsmanship and the skills required in order to make the things that he's made, the boat in particular. He's trying to highlight issues of labour and what's possible for an individual in a sort of mass-produced throw-away society.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. She deals with subjects of still life and landscape and figure but what she's actually doing with paint is really refreshing, she's sort of updating the methods of painting. It's quite contemporary in the way that she uses paint and if you look at her 'Black Square' painting, it looks as though she's making traditional monochrome paintings, abstract paintings but when you get up close, what she's done with the paint is she's verted that particular type of paint by putting a landscape, a very conventional landscape right at the centre of the work and she's hidden it in this really thick sort of sticky mass of paint and the brush strokes that she's used to do this.\"\u003cbr/\u003e18. Various Turner prize nominees\u003cbr/\u003eQuirky but uncontroversial appears to be the aesthetic among the works shortlisted for this year's Turner Prize for contemporary art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four finalists for the prestigious award have produced pieces, unveiled Monday, that include a clean-burning\u003cbr/\u003emotorised bicycle, a hidden depiction of trees in a forest, a tape-covered floor and an artist's wistful grandmother.\u003cbr/\u003eRachel Tant, Assistant Curator rejected criticism that the prize sought to reward shock value over artistic merit, saying the jury of critics and curators did not seek out controversy.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said: \"Our aim is to raise awareness of contemporary art. We want to encourage discussion, and sometimes people respond to things in different ways.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Turner prize has often generated controversy with many of its past winners having produced provocative, unusual works. They include Grayson Perry, a transvestite whose pottery depicted sex acts, and Keith Tyson, who presented lead casts of every item on Kentucky Fried Chicken's menu.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors to this year's Turner Prize exhibition, which opens Tuesday at the Tate Britain, would first see a wooden shed _ Simon Starling's work titled 'Shedboatshed.'\u003cbr/\u003eIt began as a shed before he dismantled it, built a boat that he paddled down the Rhine, and then reconstructed it\u003cbr/\u003eas a shed in Basel, Switzerland.  \"She challenges the established messages and the expectations we bring to them in an extraordinary way,\" Tate curator Lizzie Carey-Thomas said.\u003cbr/\u003e'Black Square,' for instance, appears to be just that  - a lumpy mess of black paint on a canvas. A closer look at\u003cbr/\u003ethe texture under light, however, reveals a detailed woodland scene in relief.\u003cbr/\u003eA step into the exhibition room of Jim Lambie presents visitors with an entirely different visual experience which  is the desired effect of the floor Lambie created from crosshatched stripes of black, white and silver tape beneath paint-covered statues of birds.\u003cbr/\u003eThe room reflects Lambie's interest in music with the title 'The Kinks,' after the British rock band, whose silhouette appears sideways on a wall.\u003cbr/\u003eMusic also fills the room of Darren Almond's deeply personal display of video and light with a soundtrack of a melancholic piano song.\u003cbr/\u003eA projected screen shows Almond's widowed grandmother looking nostalgic as she appears to watch a video depicting\u003cbr/\u003ethe feet of a couple dancing in the Tower Ballroom of working class Blackpool, England, where she and her husband had their honeymoon.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is even traditional painting in the running for this year's prize.\u003cbr/\u003eStill-life by Gillian Carnegie bringing a surprising twist to traditional subject matter.\u003cbr/\u003e'Black Square'  for instance, appears to be just that  - a lumpy mess of black paint on a canvas. A closer look at\u003cbr/\u003ethe texture under light, however, reveals a detailed woodland scene in relief.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, with perhaps the exception of Gillian Carnegie's ongoing series of \"bum paintings\", which she has painted alongside oils of landscapes and flowers, there is little to shock this year.\u003cbr/\u003ePrize sponsor Gordon's gin increased prize money this year so the winner would receive 25,000 pounds (US$43,952) and others on the shortlist get 5,000 pounds (US$8,780) each.\u003cbr/\u003eThe award focuses on artists under 50 and the work they have exhibited in the past year.\u003cbr/\u003eCulture Minister David Lammy will announce the Turner winner Dec. 5.
