the travellers' money.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS affecting Hong Kong and many foreign governments warning against travel there, the shoppers are hard to find.\u003cbr/\u003eTourist arrivals dropped 30% in the last week of March, and have been steadily plunging as the health scare continues.\u003cbr/\u003eEconomists at Morgan Stanley are predicting that Hong Kong could lose 256 (M) million US dollars in tourism revenue in the next two months.\u003cbr/\u003eRonnie Ho of the Hong Kong Travel Industry Council says that things could be much worse and could put many people out of business.\u003cbr/\u003eWorst hit could be the small businessmen who don't have as much to fall back on as big merchants.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world economy had already driven down spending power locally, and the pneumonia scare is driving away the rest.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the situation is the same for low end and high end products, for designer shops as well as budget tailors. \u003cbr/\u003eWith the SARS virus also affecting people on the mainland, there might be some hope that visitors from China might still come, but Ho says the mainland visitors have been cancelling tours by the same proportion as others.\u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong weathered another illness in late 1997, a bird flu that was also thought to come from China.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral people died from the disease, but a sweeping extermination of various fowl by the Hong Kong government fixed the problem quickly and business rebounded within a couple of months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe
