Various of Palestine Youth Orchestra concert in Ramallah\u003cbr/\u003eAs Palestine''''s bid for international recognition is debated at the United Nations ( 30 September), artists are pushing ahead with promoting Palestinian cultural identity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestine Youth Orchestra is at the centre of this cultural movement - which is proving to be a vital artistic lifeline to young musicians from the West Bank and elsewhere in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe call to prayer mingles with birdsong in this tranquil retreat on the West Bank.\u003cbr/\u003ePolitics seem very far away at Bir Zeit, a West Bank village where musicians from the Palestine Youth Orchestra rehearse in peace and quiet.\u003cbr/\u003eFor pianist Fadi Deeb, rehearsing here is the perfect preparation for a high profile orchestral concert in Ramallah.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestine Youth Orchestra is an offshoot of the Palestine National Orchestra, created under the umbrella of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, which has several branches in the West Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Orchestra was formed seven years ago to bring together Palestinian musicians from all over the world, united in a common cause.\u003cbr/\u003eWith members aged between 13 and 26, it is an international melting pot for young people who share a common identity and a love of music. \u003cbr/\u003eThe orchestra is made up of Palestinians from the Territories, with others born of Palestinian parents, but living abroad.\u003cbr/\u003eOrchestra Manager Tim Pottier describes the international reach of the musicians:\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the eight Palestine Youth Orchestra project. The Palestine Youth Orchestra has been going since 2004 and it was the product of a rise in music education in the 90s, when people started to re-establish culture in the West Bank.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"To form this orchestra people have flown from all around Europe, America. They''''re mostly Palestinian students, but they''''re not all living in the West Bank at the moment,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Youth Orchestra also invites foreign musicians, with 17 coming this year from Syria, Egypt, Italy, Spain, the UK, France and Iceland.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch a rich mix is inspiring but it can create it''''s own problems.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinians from outside the West Bank often speak a different colloquial Arabic - a problem they have to overcome when working with colleagues from Ramallah or Bethlehem. \u003cbr/\u003eThat''''s how it is for 15-year-old violinist Nada El-Omari, who grew up in Canada with her Palestinian father and Egyptian mother:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It''''s really challenging, the music is challenging. The fact that I live outside, and just talking is sometimes hard because I''''m not used to talking in Arabic. I talk Egyptian, so just trying to, just kinda melt in with everyone.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor the musicians, the hard work is worth the effort, especially for local Palestinians like 13-year-old violinist Mostafa Saad. He was barely seven when he started to play and comes from Mghar, an Arab village in Northern Israel. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For me, the meaning of playing with this orchestra is that I can give, and help make a successful orchestra that can be famous and represent Palestine around the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince its creation in 2004, the Orchestra has played in several European and Arab countries, from Jordan to Germany, Greece and Syria. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo concerts were given this summer in Ramallah and Nablus, the West Bank''''s biggest cities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concert included music from Tchaikovsky, Rossini and Shostakovich as well as an original piece composed for the occasion by Swedish musician Roger Larsson, the orchestra''''s guest composer. \u003cbr/\u003e\"One of my high moments was yesterday, when we worked and suddenly things started to fall into place. It can be an emotional journey, he says:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I''''m also proud of having such orchestra because it is an achievement for the Conservatory and for the Palestinian youth to have such an orchestra to represent them worldwide, and inspire those who want to play music in Palestine and - and bring hope.\"\u003cbr/\u003eArabs form about one-fifth of Israel''''s population of some 7.4 million. Israeli Arabs hold citizenship rights that give them access to Israeli social services and other benefits. That''''s in stark contrast to the restrictions placed on their Palestinian brethren in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,\u003cbr/\u003eTravel restrictions between Israel and the Palestinian Territories were tightened during and after the Second Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israel of the early 2000s. A West Bank resident needs a special travel document to leave the area, and pass through at least one checkpoint to enter Israel.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout an invitation from the Palestine Youth Orchestra, it would have been hard for clarinetist Mohamed Najem, a West Bank-resident, to meet Mostafa Saad, a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship. \u003cbr/\u003eFor all these musicians, playing with the the Palestine Youth Orchestra transcends politics. For them it''''s the music that matters.\u003cbr/\u003eEventually, the most talented musicians will have a chance to move up and become part of the Palestine National
