Tilt up from a B2R ID card of an employee to her saying UPSOUND: (English) \" Okay ï¿½Thanks Bye.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA data processing company in India has transported the country's outsourcing boom from metropolitan Bangalore and the suburbs of New Delhi to a farming village in the Himalayan foothills.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's created 50 new jobs and brought a glimmer of hope to a cluster of farming hamlets barely touched by India's economic transformation over the past two decades.\u003cbr/\u003eSimayal, a village nestling in the hills of the northern state of Uttarakhand, is home to 110 families.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside an old flour mill in the village, a steady procession of women aged way beyond their years walk by carrying on their heads stacks of firewood and animal fodder they have been collecting during hours of foraging in the forest. \u003cbr/\u003eInside, a maze of rooms that had been intended as cramped housing for poor families is accommodating the staff of the rural outsourcing company B2R.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the central office, employees are working on a project for a legal publisher turning scans of court cases into searchable databases. \u003cbr/\u003eIn another room, sales data is being collected for cellphone companies. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd in a further room, women take calls on behalf of a family planning group. \u003cbr/\u003eWhat used to be a kitchen, is now the server room.\u003cbr/\u003eB2R and a handful of similar firms are trying to offer an alternative road map for Indian economic growth. CEO, Dhiraj Dolwani says he is moving the work to where it can be done cheapest.\u003cbr/\u003eGrowing disillusioned with his former life as an executive at urban outsourcing firms, Dolwani and a partner toyed with starting their own company in the hills of Uttarakhand, where they had routinely vacationed to escape the city.\u003cbr/\u003eAssured of a ready supply of educated, frustrated youth, B2R rented the only building of any real size in the town and Dolwani began what he assumed would be the long, costly process of connecting to a faraway Internet line.\u003cbr/\u003eBut to his delight he found that the fibre optic cable ran right under the building, laid during an earlier programme to spread Internet access, but never turned on.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The optic fibre actually runs below the building itself and that was a very fortuitous discoveryï¿½ï¿½and since then we have learnt to ask where the lines are laid and consciously take a call on, even if we don't have an optic fibre nearby, how can we put a centre there?\" \u003cbr/\u003eB2R paid to upgrade the village's phone and electricity systems, installed a generator to work through the daily power cuts, gave employees intensive English and skills training and opened for business three years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThey replicated that plan in four other villages in the region and now employ nearly 250 people in total.\u003cbr/\u003eLess than 5 percent of rural Indians have ever used the Internet and many have never even heard of it, according to a recent study by the IMRB market research firm. \u003cbr/\u003eHalf the staff in B2R's office here says they had never seen a computer before starting this job.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore B2R arrived, Simayal was being drained of its bright young men as they left for cities to search for work. \u003cbr/\u003eIts women had little option but to wed right out of school. Nearly everyone's survival was tied to the whim of the rains and prayers for a strong harvest.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, men are staying. Some who left have returned. Many women have put off marriage to work and are helping to support their families. Other new businesses are opening up.\u003cbr/\u003eV.K. Madhavan has spent the past eight years running Chirag, a local development organisation. He says: \"B2R has provided jobs for young people, it has created the possibility that they don't have to migrate out of the region in search of work, they can stay on in their villages and earn a ï¿½.you know, secure income.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the proud owners of the rarest of commodities in rural India - a company job - is 20-year old Shobha Bisht.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago when she was offered a job by B2R, her brother laughed and told her he would never let her take it.\u003cbr/\u003eBut her mother forced him to back down. Today, she straddles the traditional woman's role of domestic labour and the man's role of earning money and being doted on.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I came into B2R I got a good opportunity near my house because I had no option of going out and working. And my parents would not have sent me alsoï¿½.they thought that once I pass my inter (10th grade) they would get me married. So, my coming to B2R and working here I feel it's a great opportunity and because of this I'm not yet married and I can do my job and also help my mother and father financially.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBisht still helps cook dinner. She does laundry on her day off, but no longer collects wood in the forest.\u003cbr/\u003eHer family has added a wide brick kitchen and concrete living room to the small two mud rooms of its house. \u003cbr/\u003eThey bought a TV.  Bisht paid hospital bills for her brother, kept her family from having to borrow money at 60 percent interest from a loan shark and, in an incredible role reversal, helped pay for her brother's wedding.\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps more stunning in a society where daughters are often viewed as an economic burden, Bisht is putting money away to pay for her eventual dowry.\u003cbr/\u003eHer mother, Devki says: \"Had she have been sitting at home, we would have had to have got her married ï¿½she is working now and she is independent and she can do a lot for herself.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile workers in the Delhi suburbs make about 8,000 rupees ($160) a month, B2R's start at about 4,700 rupees ($95). \u003cbr/\u003eB2R sys the lower salary is justified by the lower cost of living here, and many workers say they are still saving significant portions of their salary.\u003cbr/\u003eBhuwan Butholia is 28 years old. He used to make 8,000 rupees ($160) with overtime in an auto parts factory 150 kilometers (90 miles) away. He says the lower salary at B2R is a reasonable trade-off for being able to look after his parents and live with his wife and 5-month-old baby:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Before I used to spend most of my salary on rent. Now I can save a little because I work close to my homeï¿½not many expenses here as compared to working outside. Even if I go walking to my office I manage and even though the money is less I manage.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Internet-based companies like B2R can provide some relief in poor farming areas, few believe it will eliminate India's need to build up urban infrastructure and attract more of its people to the economic hubs in the cities.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, the impact of bringing respectable jobs into the village has been enormous as other young people have come up with ideas for setting up their own businesses. \u003cbr/\u003eSome families are adding rooms to houses to rent out to B2R workers who live too far away to commute. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd directly across from the office has risen a mini-mall with snack shop, luncheonette and welding shop - all doing brisk business.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are more signs of an unfolding social transformation.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen once too shy to speak in public in this conservative society, now drink tea with male co-workers.\u003cbr/\u003eA few wear jeans in place of the traditional baggy salwar kameez.\u003cbr/\u003eDolwani says: \"The sheer presence of the economic activity of 50 people working over here and the money that they earn from that being spent in that local area has generated a significant amount of economic activity, whether it is in the local shop, which provides us chai (tea) as well as breakfast and lunch or the other shops that have opened up or mushroomed up since then.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe government plans to spend $6.5 billion to lay fibre optic cable to each of the country's 250,000 towns. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rural outsourcers are the pioneers.  With just over 5,000 jobs, they make up a tiny fraction of India's $16.9 billion outsourcing industry, but trade group Nasscom estimates they will account for 84,000 jobs in five
