Van Bree walking away from the camera, smiling\u003cbr/\u003eA jury in Belgium on Wednesday convicted a 19-year-old for the 2006 killing of a white toddler and her black baby sitter, and the wounding a woman of Turkish descent.\u003cbr/\u003eHans Van Themsche faced a maximum penalty of life in prison at his sentencing hearing on Thursday, after the 12-person jury in the port city of Antwerp ruled he was guilty of racially motivated murder and attempted murder.\u003cbr/\u003eThe jury's ruling, issued after a 10-day trial, rejected the defence's argument that Van Themsche had been mentally insane and not responsible for the May 2006 shooting spree in Antwerp.\u003cbr/\u003eVan Themsche acknowledged his guilt for the crimes earlier on Wednesday, but said he could not be held responsible because he suffered from a mental ailment.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first time in Belgium a murder case of racial intentions has been brought to trial.\u003cbr/\u003eOulemata Niangadou, 24, from Mali and the 2-year-old toddler she was baby-sitting, Luna Drowart, were shot to death. \u003cbr/\u003eSongul Kuc was wounded before police shot and wounded Van Themsche.\u003cbr/\u003eRelatives of the two victims and Kuc, came to the courtroom on Thursday to hear the verdict against Van Themsche.\u003cbr/\u003eLaurence Van Bree, the mother of Luna Drowart, the two-year-old Belgian girl who was killed, left the court house accompanied by Roman Drowart, Luna's father. Both parents were smiling, but would not comment.\u003cbr/\u003eJef Vermassen, lawyer for the parents of murdered 2-year-old Luna Drowart said \"my clients are very happy because they say this is justice, but meanwhile they say \"our daughter, Luna, she'll never come back.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRelatives of Niangadou, expressed their relief at the verdict and pointed to the importance of justice being done on a racist crime.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope this will be an example to all those who are racist: they must change, there is no place for them in the 21st Century,\" Demba Modibo, Oulematou Niangadou's uncle told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice and prosecutors argued during the trial that Van Themsche wanted to kill some five to 10 people during an apparent suicidal rampage, noting he had 20 bullets with him as he hunted down his unknown victims in the narrow cobblestone streets of central Antwerp.\u003cbr/\u003eVan Themsche blamed blacks and other minorities for teasing him during his elementary school years, according to evidence presented during the trial.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors said Van Themsche was a weapons and violence junkie, obsessed with revenge.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shootings unleashed a widespread public outcry against racist violence. Around 20,000 people took to the streets of Antwerp two weeks after the shootings to show solidarity with minorities across Belgium and to ease ethnic tensions in the city, which for years has struggled to keep peace between ethnic communities.\u003cbr/\u003eAntwerp is also the base of the far-right and anti-immigrant Flemish Interest party, as well as large Orthodox Jewish and Moroccan
