Pollack talking to reporters\u003cbr/\u003eAcademy award-winning director, Sydney Pollack, a Hollywood mainstay who achieved commercial and critical success with the gender-bending comedy 'Tootsie' and the period drama 'Out Of Africa', has died aged 73.\u003cbr/\u003ePollack died of cancer on Monday afternoon at his home in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, surrounded by family.\u003cbr/\u003eHe had been diagnosed with cancer about nine months ago.\u003cbr/\u003ePollack appeared on the screen himself working with some of Hollywood's best actors in a long career that reached prominence in the 1970s and 1980s.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1970, \"They Shoot Horses, Don't They?\" about Great Depression marathon dancers, received nine Oscar nominations, including one for\u003cbr/\u003ePollack's direction.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was nominated again for best director for 1982's \"Tootsie,\" starring Dustin Hoffman as a cross-dressing actor and Pollack as his exasperated\u003cbr/\u003eagent. \u003cbr/\u003eAs director and producer, he won Academy Awards for the 1986 romantic epic \"Out of Africa,\" starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which captured seven Oscars in all.\u003cbr/\u003ePollack's last screen appearance was in 'Made of Honor' a recently released romantic comedy, in which he played the several times married father of Patrick Dempsey's character.\u003cbr/\u003eLast autumn, he played Marty Bach opposite George Clooney in 'Michael Clayton'. He also co-produced the movie. \u003cbr/\u003eThe film received seven Oscar nominations, including best picture and a best actor nod for Clooney and won Tilda Swinton an Oscar for best supporting actress.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, Pollack produced many independent films with filmmaker Anthony Minghella and a production company Mirage Enterprises.\u003cbr/\u003eHis recent producing credits include \"The Talented Mr. Ripley\"; \"Cold Mountain\"; \"Sketches of Frank Gehry,\" a documentary that was the final film directed by Pollack; and the new HBO film \"Recount,\" about the 2000 presidential election.\u003cbr/\u003eSidney Irwin Pollack was born in Lafayette, Indiana to first-generation Russian-Americans.\u003cbr/\u003eIn high school he fell in love with the theatre, a passion
