Pan left of thousands of demonstrators \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Argentines gathered in front of the presidential palace on Thursday to protest a recent government decision  to nationalise 30 (b) billion US dollars in private pension funds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe protestors demanded that they are given the choice of whether to put their pension savings into private or public funds.\u003cbr/\u003eOne protestor said she felt like she had been \"pick-pocketed\" by the government, while another said it was important to join Thursday's demonstration \"to protest as Argentines for the way these people are governing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs the protest was taking place, the measure was facing stiff opposition from lawmakers who want to make sure the money is spent exclusively on retirees, not public works projects or debt payments.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Cristina Fernandez said her surprise plan to take over 10 private pension funds was meant only to protect retirement money from global financial crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eBut investors drove stock prices down 20 percent in two days, fearing that state managers would dump equities, buy bonds and limit access to cash for publicly traded companies.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics also see the plan as proof that the Argentine government is running short on cash and looking for new ways of avoiding defaulting on 28 (b) billion US dollars in debt that matures over the next three years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe global crisis drove Argentina's benchmark Merval stock index down 44 percent between July 1 and on Tuesday, and the Merval plummeted 20 percent more after the plan was announced. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, Fernandez allies voiced support for the plan and the Merval gained 2.4 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Fernandez opponents said they would support the nationalisation if the government guarantees that pension fund assets will not be spent on anything but retirees.\u003cbr/\u003eRuling party allies didn't immediately respond to this demand. \u003cbr/\u003eBut if the government can't use pension fund assets to pay its debts, a default could be more likely. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout the pension assets, analysts warn that Argentina's fiscal surplus could disappear as tax revenue from soy and other commodity exports plunge.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly one in four Argentines belong to the private pension system, which pools their 11-percent contributions and employers' 16-percent payroll contributions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new plan would transfer that cash to the Social Security administration, while allowing workers to continue investing additional savings in private funds.\u003cbr/\u003eOpposition to the nationalisation has been muted, partly because it has little impact on current wages, unlike Argentina's infamous freezing of bank savings during the 2001 economic collapse that led to a world record 95 (b) billion US dollars
