Various still photos of house winner of award, Klein Bottle House by McBride Charles Ryan Studio.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish city of Barcelona has been hosting the World Architecture  Festival, which celebrates global design.\u003cbr/\u003eProjects from 67 different countries have been on show, many reflecting the tough economic times we're currently living in. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom Antoni's Gaudi's modernist buildings to modern skyscrapers designed by world-class architects, Barcelona is a true architectural Mecca.\u003cbr/\u003eThe renaissance experienced by the Catalan capital in recent years has been recognised with the city becoming the base for the World Architecture Festival for the second year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event - which ran from 4th to 6th of November - brought together some of the world's finest architects, and showcased many innovative buildings .\u003cbr/\u003e272 projects were finally shortlisted, in 15 categories.\u003cbr/\u003eBuildings by internationally renowned architects such as Grimshaw, Foster + Partners, Farrells and Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP as well as smaller practices were included among the shortlisted projects. \u003cbr/\u003eProjects hailed from 67 different countries including Iran, Syria, Sierra Leone, India, as well as Canada, Australia, USA and the UK.\u003cbr/\u003ePaul Finch is the programme director of the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that this year's theme exhibition was focused on the world financial crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eFinch thinks that times of crisis are a good chance to examine the challenges facing architects to produce more value for less cost. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The awards have many categories. And we also have a theme exhibition which this year is \"less does more\" which is because we're going through times of economic austerity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEqo Leung represents Opus Architecture, one of the best architectural studios of New Zealand.\u003cbr/\u003eOpus designed a school for children with special needs in the outskirts of Auckland.\u003cbr/\u003eWilson School was shortlisted in the \"learning\" category.\u003cbr/\u003eThe building opened in September 2008 is made of wood, steel and glass with open spaces fitted with state-of-the-art facilities to suit the needs of disadvantaged children.\u003cbr/\u003eEqo Leung explains that financial hardship forced the local city council to set a tight budget to construct the school, something that was both a challenge and an advantage.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're always looking for simplicity. That is what we strive for.\"\u003cbr/\u003eConfirmed jurors this year include Rafael Vinoly, Farshid Moussavi, Vittorio Lampugnani, Sir Peter Cook, Kengo Kuma, Will Alsop, Roger Zogolovitch, and Nabil Gholam, plus architectural media editors from around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eNabil Gholam was both a nominee and a juror in this year's festival.\u003cbr/\u003eRegarded as one of the best architects in Lebanon, Gholam and his associates have studios in Beirut and Barcelona.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year Gholam decided to participated submitting the AZ house project, a high rise building in downtown Beirut that didn't win in its category.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the financial crisis has put a halt to the sometimes exaggerated eccentricities both demanded from clients and proposed by the architects.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is more concern about the environment and buildings are becoming more reasonable to a certain degree. Which combines public space for the city and a building tucked underneath for our client from which to sell tickets for the Broadway theatres.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDebbie Ryan comes from Melbourne, Australia where she and her husband Rob Mc Bride own a prestigious architectural studio.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mc Bride Charles Ryan studio designed Klein Bottle House, a structure that resembles the shape of an origami paper that won the award in the \"house\" category.\u003cbr/\u003eThe house was made of cement sheet, metal and plastic and functions as a private residence in a suburban area of Melbourne right next to a natural park.\u003cbr/\u003eRyan says that events of this kind serve as an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world to exchange ideas and experiences.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well I'm thrilled with the result that we've won an award.
