But in rare cases, cytomegalovirus, or CMV, can be devastating for infants whose mothers were infected during pregnancy.Erica Steadman didn't have any...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIt's a common virus most people have never heard of because it's usually harmless. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in rare cases, cytomegalovirus, or CMV, can be devastating for infants whose mothers were infected during pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003eErica Steadman didn't have any complications during her pregnancy and had no idea her baby daughter was infected whilst in the womb with a rare virus.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the cytomegalovirus infection, or CMV, meant baby Evelyn was born with a small head and probable brain damage.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe's also deaf and potentially faces lifelong developmental problems.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Part of what dealing with this virus is, is that it can happen to anybody. It can happen to a very healthy person like me,\" says Steadman.\u003cbr/\u003eCMV is a common, usually harmless virus. But in a rare, unlucky set of circumstances, it can be devastating for infants whose mothers become infected during pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The challenge we have is because the infection is asymptomatic, you don't know when the mum gets it,\" says Dr. Kenneth Alexander, a paediatric infectious diseases expert at the University of Chicago, where Evelyn is being treated.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The challenge with Cytomegalovirus is that when it infects the baby, the part of the baby that's most affected is the growing nervous system.  So what happens is that babies that acquire Cytomegalovirus during pregnancy are at high risk for hearing problems and for mental retardation. And so, it's important that we try and find ways to intervene. Now the challenge we have is because the infection is asymptomatic, you don't know when mum gets it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBrain damage, deafness and other birth defects are among potential problems when women inadvertently transmit the virus in the womb. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There are some children with CMV who present with normal hearing at birth but then their hearing loss deteriorates with time,\" says Dr. Dana Suskind, a professor of surgery and paediatrics at the University of Chicago, who is also treating Evelyn.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And so, that's why it's very important that we continue to monitor these children.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBecause those complications are so rare, most people have never heard of CMV.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chances of getting infected while pregnant are small, and the chances of passing along the virus in utero are even smaller. \u003cbr/\u003eOf about four million annual U.S. births, about 30-thousand,  less than one per cent, are born with a CMV infection. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout five thousand of those babies will have CMV-related permanent problems.\u003cbr/\u003eCMV is related to germs that cause genital herpes, cold sores, and chickenpox.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt spreads by exposure to body fluids from an infected person. \u003cbr/\u003eInfections are usually silent but can also cause sore throats and fatigue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe virus can be serious for people with weakened immune systems, including HIV-infected patients and organ transplant recipients. \u003cbr/\u003eIt can also interfere with prenatal brain growth.\u003cbr/\u003eSteadman says she did everything she could think of to stay healthy during her pregnancy, and her daughter's condition is overwhelming at times.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Some days are really good, and she's such a cheerful, happy baby,\" says Steadman.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut there are times when she says the therapies, doctor appointments and MRI's are tough to handle.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Even one of those things could make a parent be scared, and all of it really can terrify you,\" says Steadman.  \"We embrace her and love her, always, but you know, it's sometimes, when we go to bed and we're talking about, you know, her care and the therapies and the doctors' appointments, and the MRIs, and all of these things that go into her condition.  It's, I mean, even one of those things could make a parent be scared, and all of it really can terrify you.\"\u003cbr/\u003eInfectious disease specialists, parents of affected children, and even some legislators, are trying to spread awareness about the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eEvidence indicates doctors don't often mention CMV to pregnant patients.  \u003cbr/\u003eMost experts don't recommend routine CMV testing in newborns, partly because congenital CMV is uncommon and usually causes no problems. \u003cbr/\u003eAll U.S. newborns get blood tests to screen for at least 30 rare but serious diseases and undergo hearing tests before leaving the hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eA CMV test would potentially subject newborns to a separate test because blood tests may not be ideal for detecting the virus. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There's now an idea afoot that what we should do is look for any baby who flunks a hearing test in the newborn period and see if there are things we can do to help this child because maybe that's a baby with cytomegalovirus,\" says Alexander. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If that child has cytomegalovirus infection, we can support the family and support the child through things like early intervention.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say pregnant women who contract the virus often get it from young children, who tend to be more contagious than adults. \u003cbr/\u003eThe CDC recommends hygiene measures that may reduce the chances of getting infected. \u003cbr/\u003eThese include not sharing food, utensils or toothbrushes used by young children; and thorough hand-washing after changing diapers, handling children's toys or wiping their noses.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eChicago, Illinois - 31 March, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
