Commander Brian Moum, Captain of the Arleigh Burke, looking through binoculars
On April 9th 2009 seven Somali pirates were arraigned in a court in the Kenyan port of Mombasa after being handed over to the Kenyan authorities by the German Navy a day earlier.
The week before, the pirates had attacked a German military supply ship, which returned fire and pursued the seven pirates.
It then managed to detain them with help of other ships participating in the anti-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa.
Piracy is rampant off Somalia, which has not had a functioning government for 18 years.
In the last year, pirates have captured trawlers, small fishing boats, cruise ships and even a cargo ship laden with heavy weapons.
Many of the pirates have shifted their operations down the Somali coastline from the Gulf of Aden to escape naval warship patrols, which have had some success in preventing attacks in the Gulf of Aden.
Pirates travel in open skiffs with outboard engines, working with larger ships that tow them far out to sea.
They use satellite navigational and communications equipment, and have an intimate knowledge of local waters, clambering aboard commercial vessels with ladders and grappling hooks.
On April 12th negotiations continued for the freedom of Captain Richard Phillips, the American ship captain of the Maersk Alabama, captured by Somali pirates off the East Africa coast.
On April 11th, the nineteen American sailors who escaped the pirate hijacking reached safe harbour, arriving to the Kenyan port of Mombasa.
With a throng of reporters shouting questions from shore, the crew described an ordeal that began with Somali pirates hauling themselves onto the deck from a small boat bobbing on the surface of the Indian Ocean far below.
Phillips was taken hostage after surrendering himself to the pirates to safeguard his men, crew members said.
The 53 year-old captain is being held in an enclosed lifeboat by four pirates being closely watched by US warships in an increasingly tense standoff.
The U.S. Navy has assumed that the pirates in the lifeboat would try to get it to shore, even though the vessel apparently has no fuel and is drifting.
A Pentagon spokesman said negotiations were ongoing.
Phillips' crew were still on board the freighter on April 12th, moored at the quayside in Mombasa, whilst the FBI investigates the attack.
The shipping line said on April 11th it was not clear when they would be allowed home.
In a separate incident, other bandits, among the hundreds who have made the Gulf of Aden the world's most dangerous waterway, seized an Italian tugboat off Somalia's north coast on April 11th as it was pulling barges, a spokeswoman at NATO's Northwood maritime command centre outside London said.
A piracy expert said the two hijackings did not appear related.
Somali pirates are holding about a dozen ships with more than 200 crew members, according to the Malaysia-based International Maritime Bureau, a piracy watchdog group.
On April 16th an American cargo ship damaged by grenades and automatic gunfire in a pirate attack arrived safely to the Kenyan port of Mombasa, complete with its supply of food aid.
The black and red Liberty Sun sailed into the port early in the morning local time but television pictures from the scene could not immediately reveal the damage from the failed assault that did not harm its 20-member crew.
Pirates launched four rocket-propelled grenades, while and bullets pierced its bridge structure and blew out some windows, a US official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak about the private ship.
The damage did not affect the ability to navigate by the crew, which barricaded itself into the engine room.
The military says a US destroyer was sent to the rescue but the pirates left before it arrived.
On April 28th the Togo-flagged MV Sea Horse arrived in Mombasa port, after reportedly being hijacked by pirates.
The freighter was allegedly hijacked on April 14th off the Somali coast after it was surrounded by several pirate skiffs.
Bernard Odemba of the Mombasa Port Authority said the captain of the Sea Horse had told him they had been hijacked about 5 weeks ago, but at this stage the reason for the discrepancy in the timing of the hijacking cannot be verified.
It is also not known under what circumstances the ship came to be allowed to dock at Mombasa.
On April 30th American naval forces handed Somali authorities the bodies of three suspected pirates, officials said, after US snipers shot the trio earlier this month during a standoff over an American hostage.
The sole surviving pirate suspect from the April 8th attack on the US-flagged Maersk Alabama is in custody in the US facing piracy charges.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Abdulle Mohamed, the chief of security in the country's northern Bossaso port, said regional authorities sent a small boat to collect the wooden coffins containing the bodies from a warship stationed around 4 miles (6.5 kilometres) off the coast.
Mohamed added the Americans said they had been doing DNA tests on the bodies during the past few days.
A spokeswoman for the Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet declined to comment on possible DNA testing, but confirmed the bodies were transferred to Somali police.
The three men, along with the fourth suspect Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse, dominated the world's television screens for days following their attack on the Alabama and the standoff over the ship's captain, Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage.
Muse eventually surrendered to a nearby warship to seek treatment for a wound sustained during the attack, and now faces trial in New York.
Navy SEAL sharpshooters killed his three companions after they pointed their guns at Phillips.
Armed pirates from Somalia have been attacking and hijacking ships in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, capturing dozens of vessels, kidnapping hundreds of hostages and raking in millions (m) of dollars in ransoms.
The attacks have raised insurance costs for shipping companies and disrupted the United Nations aid supplies to desperate African nations.
On June 28th Somali pirates released the entire crew of a Belgian ship seized 10 weeks previously after a ransom was paid, the Belgian government confirmed.
The 10-member crew of the Pompei dredger was in good health and sailing the ship to an unidentified harbour where it was expected to arrive in a few days, the government said.
The crew members would then fly home to their families.
Talking to reporters in Brussels, Defence Minister Pieter de Crem said the ship's owners had paid a ransom to release the ship and crew.
He declined to say how much, but said pirates had demanded eight (M) million US dollars.
A plane dropped the money into the sea near the Belgian vessel, according to the director general of the crisis centre.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
