(May 14)\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]  \u003cbr/\u003e  The number of Christians who once called Iraq home continues to shrink, and it appears those numbers will continue to fall.\u003cbr/\u003e  The last official Iraqi census in 1987 found 1.4 million Christians in Iraq.  The U-S State Department now estimates that number to be between 550- and 800-thousand.  Most of those who have left the country have done so since the war in Iraq started in 2003.\u003cbr/\u003e  Christians first started fleeing Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War, but the numbers shot up as violence escalated.\u003cbr/\u003e  For the Iraq's future -- the number of Christians has practical implications. Historically, Christians have made up a large portion of the country's doctors, engineers and civil servants.\u003cbr/\u003e  Pope Benedict has called attention to Christians in the Mideast during his visit to the region this week.\u003cbr/\u003e  He has urged the international community to ensure the survival of the ancient Christian community.\u003cbr/\u003e  But many Arab Christians say they are fleeing to the West because they feel increasingly unwelcome in the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eDATELINE: Various, 13/14 May 2009/File\u003cbr/\u003eBaghdad, Iraq - May 14, 2009\u003cbr/\u003e1.
