Exterior of bakery    \u003cbr/\u003eAn unemployed German baker has found a way to create his own job - and help consumers at the same time - in times of financial crisis and increasing food prices.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter an unsuccessful job hunt over the past year, Bernd Heberger opened the first German bakery that sells all baked products for just one Euro last November.\u003cbr/\u003eHow can he sell his bread, rolls and buns so cheaply? His baked goods are a day old. Still fresh enough to eat and enjoy, but not fresh enough to sell at top prices. \u003cbr/\u003eHe offers customers a kilo loaf of bread for one Euro, twelve bread rolls for one Euro, and three pieces of pastry for one Euro. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is a hit. Demand for his baked goods is high. Bernd Heberger sells about 1,500 items every day, he says. Food that would be thrown away otherwise.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"At the moment we have a tense economic situation. Everybody has to watch their costs; every penny. This is just not right, when people go hungry.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe start of the financial crisis in 2007 caused an increase of commodity prices worldwide and a massive increase of food prices. More than 900 (m) million people worldwide suffer from hunger, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN.\u003cbr/\u003eEven in a wealthy country like Germany, food prices have increased faster then other consumer prices.  \u003cbr/\u003eBernd Heberger's store soon became a magnet for thrifty shoppers in this neighbourhood in southern Nuremberg. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople from the outskirts of Nuremberg come to his store to buy his day-old hand-made baked goods. \u003cbr/\u003eSteffi and Alexander Pritzl are a couple of regulars at the shop. The 27-year-old dental assistant and her 25-year-old husband live with their two-year-old son at the edge of Nuremberg. \u003cbr/\u003eThey stop in at the shop a few times a week to buy bread and rolls for the family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't see a reason why I should buy the same products I get here for less money somewhere else for more money. We are a young family with one child and we notice that we save money by the end of the month. Money we can use for our child.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eHenry Urban, a 56-year-old self-employed builder comes to the bakery for breakfast.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The products I can buy here are affordable and good quality. And especially the the whole grain products I like to buy are inexpensive here.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt may seem like a long way from the middle east oil fields and the African cotton farms. But rising prices for such basic commodities are filtering through into the costs of staple foods and hitting the budgets of ordinary families in Germany and around the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have to consider that prices for raw material increased in the past and are still increasing,\" says Ferdinand Fichtner of the German Institute of Economic research Berlin. \"This phenomenon affects other prices like oil prices, prices for petrol and commodity prices. They will clearly increase as well. The result of it is that people get for their same income less commodity like bread, meat and so on than before,\" \u003cbr/\u003eBernd Heberger says people from all walks of life shop at his bakery.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People who come here are from all different economic backgrounds. And sometimes my wife and I get goosebumps because the people are happy and leaving our store with a smile.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eHow does he do it? Every night Bernd Heberger goes to an industrial bakery in Nuremberg and collects the leftovers of the day.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his store his employees wrap the products in plastic bags and sell them the next morning.\u003cbr/\u003eHis business idea worked and his store boomed which made him decide to open a second store in Nuremberg in March 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eBernd Heberger serves 200 to 300 customers every day.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the idea is catching on. He gets calls everyday from people all around Germany who want to start their own one Euro bakery. \u003cbr/\u003eThe popularity of Heberger's bakery not only shows it's a solid business idea, but also reveals how widespread is the need for basic staple foods at affordable prices - even in a wealthy country like Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Federal Office of Statistics in Wiesbaden,
