Various of students following teacher dancing to Andean music\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of Bolivia's poorest and most indigenous cities, El Alto, a classical ballet academy has been teaching dozens of children and teenagers to dance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe academy has been running for several years now and is located in a building owned by El Alto's town hall. \u003cbr/\u003eMonica Camacho, the academy director, is a Bolivian classical ballet dancer who trained at the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and also runs a ballet academy in a wealthy neighbourhood in the capital La Paz. \u003cbr/\u003eEl Alto residents, mainly immigrants from poor villages of the highlands, are great fans of traditional dances and music but were reluctant to accept classical ballet at first. \u003cbr/\u003e\"At the beginning they showed some resistance, especially concerning the clothes, because it was not part of the Aymara culture, for instance nakedness, and in ballet we use very low cut clothes to show the body because the body is our way of expression and we cannot hide it,\" Camacho said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city of 800-thousand inhabitants has many social problems but local authorities are trying to promote culture. The 300 academy students don't need to pay any tuition or fees. \u003cbr/\u003eThe students seem to enjoy the classes and according to Camacho they never miss a practise even though many also work to help their families. \u003cbr/\u003eEl Alto is located among high mountains, almost 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) high which makes any physical activity harder than usual. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this does not stop the ballet students who endlessly repeat the choreographies selected by Camacho, while listening to piano music from a small CD player. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout a professional school or a national company where they can further develop their technique, ballet students in Bolivia have very narrow prospects. \u003cbr/\u003eYet, every couple of months, the academy organises shows so students can get a taste of what it is like to perform for the audience and El Alto residents can watch the school's progress. \u003cbr/\u003eLes Sylphides, a short ballet with Frederic Chopin music or The Nutcracker Suite from Piotr Tchaikovsky were among the best received by the town though the favourite remains \"The Andean Suite\". \u003cbr/\u003eCreated by Camacho, it brings together
