Wide of media conference\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil's outgoing president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, addressed the country's foreign press association in Rio de Janeiro on Friday and said he was leaving his successor Dilma Rousseff with a nation that is experiencing a time of prosperity.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter serving two terms in office, Lula steps down on the 31 of December following the election of his former cabinet chief  to succeed him.\u003cbr/\u003eLula claimed that the South American nation was starting to be recognised as a powerhouse in the world economy and that he would leave the helm with that accomplishment as part of his legacy, even as he acknowledged fear of failure along the way. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We're seeing a solid Brazil, which can become in the next six years the fifth world economy,\" added Lula as he entered the last month of his second term in office. \u003cbr/\u003eSince Lula's inauguration in 2002, the country has achieved economic stability, reduced its debt, increased its foreign reserves, and kept inflation under control. \u003cbr/\u003eThe recession that shook world financial markets was a two-quarter blip in the Brazilian economy, which was among the first to emerge. \u003cbr/\u003eThe unemployment rate is low, and the middle class is growing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think we were able to do everything we wanted to do, but I think we managed to do more than what was done during any other historical period in this country,\" Lula added.\u003cbr/\u003eLula also said he has high hopes for his successor.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am hoping she will achieve more, because that way we can believe that each new term we will be able to achieve more than the previous one,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMajor infrastructure projects: hydroelectric dams, railways, refineries all show the substance and the promise of the Brazilian economy, he said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe upcoming World Cup games in 2014 and the Olympics of 2016 will make the face of this new Brazil better known to the world. \u003cbr/\u003eHe added that the Brazilian population would not suffer in the pursuit of producing world class facilities for the two biggest sporting competitions on the planet.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We aren't going to hang our people out to dry (take money from services covered by Brazilian taxes) in order to host the World Cup.
