Cuomo receive an award at the reception inside.\u003cbr/\u003eSir Elton John and partner David Furnish were the first to arrive and spoke about the foundation's ongoing mission.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've accomplished a lot. We're near - the end of the road is in sight. There's so much medication available to prevent people from getting HIV positive. There's not a vaccine. There's not a cure. But there's medicine that you can take to stop you from getting the disease. What we need now is for people to start taking that medicine, to step up to the plate and be a little bit more responsible than they have been, and say 'Let's all end this together. Let's pull together and come out of the HIV closet. Let's not be ashamed of this. Let's get tested, and let's stop having unsafe sex,'\" John said.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn continues his global humanitarian efforts to help raise money for innovative HIV/AIDS prevention programs, campaigns to end stigma and provide treatment, care and support services for people living with the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile John founded the organization, it's Furnish that acts as chairman. Furnish says he disturbed that young people are not taking the disease seriously. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's really its complacency and stigma. People either don't want to talk about it or they think they're not vulnerable and they don't think they're at risk, when in fact, we're growing. And we shouldn't be. With the tools that we have at our disposal, with the medicines that are available, nobody should be contracting HIV. We can stop this disease dead in its tracks if attitudes catch up to the medicines,\" Furnish said.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn feels that is a big problem, and wrote a New York Times Op-Ed piece published on the day of the gala that spoke of the issue.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I just want the gay community to step up to the plate. Medical advances in the last twenty years have made sure that people have a long life now. They can live. They mustn't forget about the people who died with this disease in the most awful circumstances. The thing that bothers me now is that people don't see people dying. They don't visit hospitals beds because most people with this disease are living a normal life. So I'm saying, 'never forget those people who died because of you. Those people who were too late to get the medicine they have now. You guys have a lot to be grateful for, step up to the plate.'\" John said.\u003cbr/\u003eOn a more current note, John felt the stigma of Ebola these days shares similarity with the stigma from the early days of AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Kind of similar, yeah. It's a little bit panicky and ridiculous, yeah.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Elton John AIDS Foundation will proudly present Enduring Vision awards to Governor Andrew Cuomo, Charlie Hendon, Jay Jopling, and Nathalie and Pablo Salame.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Foundation honors Governor Cuomo for all of his extraordinary contributions to the fight against AIDS, especially his plan to end AIDS in New York State by 2020, and for his tremendous leadership in bringing marriage equality to New York. \u003cbr/\u003eCuomo spoke briefly to AP about the stigma of Ebola today sharing similarities with AIDS 30 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Uh, no. I think the Ebola is a different situation than - the people who are coming back from West Africa, if anything, these people have really performed a great service to the country and we appreciate this service, we're just trying to balance helping people in Africa with public health here in New York, and keeping people calm.
