Various of releasing water lanterns\u003cbr/\u003eWater lanterns were set alight in Taiwan at midnight on Sunday (1600 GMT) to guide the hungry ghosts living in the water to a feast on the shore.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight of the annual Ghost Festival began after dark in Keelung, one of the most important ports in northern Taiwan, with a water lantern parade.\u003cbr/\u003eWater lanterns were carried through the streets and groups performed martial arts and other folk art.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal folk opera performances were also held as the parade snaked through streets for several kilometres (miles).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ghost Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the seventh month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, comes from the origins of Buddhism and Taoism.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the Taoists, it's the birthday of Chinghsu, a god from the underworld. Chinghsu expresses his benevolence by releasing ghosts to enjoy the food provided by the the living.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the Buddhists, it's an opportunity to offer charity, in the form of vast amounts of food, to the hungry ghosts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ritual is thousands of years old but is still practised in present day Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore releasing the water lanterns, people prepare food and burn incense to worship the roaming ghosts.\u003cbr/\u003eMiniature paper boats are also stuffed with paper money and burned to please the visiting ghosts.\u003cbr/\u003eLocals see it as a very solemn festival that represents the connection between the living and the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ghost Festival lasts a month, and on the first day of the eighth month, according to the Chinese lunar
