went through some 37 drafts shuffled among the eight nations on their way to this presidents' summit, which marked the finale of Clinton's four-day tour of the region.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, he also expressed remorse for U-S support which was given to the repressive regime which ruled Guatemala in the 1980s and early 1990s.\u003cbr/\u003eClinton said that U-S policy at the time had been a grave mistake and would not be repeated.\u003cbr/\u003eA  bone of contention between the U-S and Guatemala is Washington's plan to deport illegal immigrants back to the country.\u003cbr/\u003eA temporary amnesty programme expired on Monday, and nearly 3-thousand illegal immigrants from El Salvador and Guatemala now face deportation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recognition of the bitterness which the deportations have stirred up, Clinton said on Wednesday that U-S laws which stipulate different treatment for illegal immigrants according to their nationality should be changed.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the regulations, immigrants from Nicaragua and Honduras are entitled to more liberal treatment than those from Guatemala.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, he denounced his country's role in what he called Central America's \"dark and painful period\" of civil wars and repression.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Clinton's words did not convince everyone, and as he spoke, hundreds of demonstrators stood outside
