Various exterior Otarian restaurant in Wardour Street.  \u003cbr/\u003eA new form of eco fast food is hitting the high streets in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eOtarian claims to be world's first fast food chain to carbon foot print every item on the menu to internationally recognised standards.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the successful launch of two restaurants in New York, the chain has just opened two new stores in London and is looking to expand across Europe. \u003cbr/\u003ePopping out for a burger at lunch time has just become guilt free. \u003cbr/\u003eFresh from New York, the Otarian vegetarian, fully sustainable restaurant chain has arrived in London.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd if the owners get their way, Otarian outlets will become a regular feature on high streets across Europe rivalling meat eating counterparts like McDonalds and Burger King. \u003cbr/\u003eThe concept of Otarian is fast food with a conscience. \u003cbr/\u003eThe menu is totally vegetarian, and according to the owners every single ingredient used is sustainably sourced and chosen on the merit of its carbon footprint. \u003cbr/\u003eDiners are asked to step inside and take a look at the menu - where each choice carries a PAS 2050 internationally recognised carbon foot print measure alongside the calorie content and the price. \u003cbr/\u003eThe chain is the brain child of life long vegetarian and environmentalist, Radhika Oswal - wife of Pankaj Oswal - the billionaire owner of  the fertiliser company Burrup Holdings Limited.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explians the theory behind the restaurant:  \"We've used obviously carbon foot printing which is a cradle to grave analysis in simple terms of all the greenhouse gasses in carbon equivalent terms, produced during the production and consumption of an event or product, and in this case the product is Otarian's menu items, but I feel that numbers themselves mean nothing much unless you are giving them in relevant terms, so we've also done the extra bit, so as to prepare them with similar meat based meals, so that people know the positive benefit in terms of carbon offsets. They are having each time they choose to switch from a meat based similar meal to one of Otarian's meals.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd while Oswal admits that not all the food in her restaurants is locally sourced she stresses that Otarian operates a strict no air freight policy and ingredients are only chosen if they prove to be the most sustainable option. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The tomatoes here, when they grow in winter, they grow in greenhouses and the greenhouses are heated by fossil fuels and so have three times the impact of tomatoes from Spain for example, even taking transport into account, so we source tomatoes and avocados from Spain when they are not in season in the United Kingdom.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlongside the usual veggie burgers and wraps diners can opt for the likes of vegetarian, fully sustainable tacos and sweet potato chiplets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe combo meal comprising of an Indian Chutney Burger has a carbon footprint of 1.33 kilos. The Beetroot O Feta Salad has a carbon footprint of 1.15 kgs while a side of sweet potato chiplets registers at 0.23 kgs. A Panna Cotta O Berry dessert comes in at 1.04 kgs.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Oswal the whiole meal will save 2.3kgs of carbon compared to the average meat based fast food meal - the equivalent, she says, to the CO2 emissions of a 16.8 mile (27.3 kms) drive in an eco car. \u003cbr/\u003ePrices range from around �5 GBP (6� / $7.7) for a burger to �9 GBP ( 11� / $ 14 USD) for a set meal combo. \u003cbr/\u003eAll paper packaging is bio degradable. The salad containers are made from the sugar cane by-product bagasse and the dessert pots are made from corn starch. \u003cbr/\u003eEven the ceiling d�cor and the table tops in the restaurant are from recycled aluminium and plastic. Diners sit on chairs made from sustainable bamboo and coated with non toxic paint. They walk to the counter on floor tiles made from recycled glass. \u003cbr/\u003eOtarian certainly gives you food for thought. But since Oswal says she wants her chain to appeal to the masses, will enough people be happy to go veggie to help save the planet and ensure the success of Otarian in Europe?\u003cbr/\u003e\"No!\" says this man \u003cbr/\u003eWhile another says \"If it was to save the planet and there was evidence that it would save the planet then yes, I would of course.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe global public mood has ensured that major fast food outlets concentrate on doing their bit for the environment. McDonalds has been using an environmental score card with many of it's suppliers for some years already and nearly 90% of their packaging is from renewable sources. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Burger King chain uses paper packaging for all its products and recently opened a new energy-efficient restaurant in Waghusel, Germany that uses renewable energy to power one-third of the restaurant. \u003cbr/\u003eOswal's dream would be for everyone to give up meat all together, but she says every little action helps reduce our carbon footprint. \u003cbr/\u003eOtarian's London stores are located in Wardour Street Soho and Shaftesbury Avenue with a third restaurant set to open in Regents Street at the end of the year.\u003cbr/\u003ePlans are also underway to expand the chain initially to
