Soldier closing gate to holding centre\u003cbr/\u003eThe small Italian island of Lampedusa was in a state of agitation on Sunday as the local population geared up for Monday's visit by Pope Francis.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe local priest frantically worked to prepare a wooden boat as an altar, volunteers set up chairs for the outdoor mass, and journalists flooded an improvised media centre.\u003cbr/\u003eLampedusa is a treeless, strip of an island, nine kilometres (four miles) long in the middle of the Mediterranean, closer to the African mainland than to Italy.  \u003cbr/\u003eEvery year thousands of migrants attempt the 138 kilometre (220 mile) crossing in rickety wooden boats and leaky rubber dinghies. They pay exorbitant fees to human traffickers to make their way towards what they all hope will be a better future in Europe.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past thousands of these migrants have died at sea.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Fortress Europe, an observatory on migrations and refugees, there have been 13,869 victims counted in the Mediterranean Sea between 1988 and November 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eOf those, 6,649 died in what is known as the Sicilian Canal between 1991 and 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Italian government 6,970 migrants landed on Italian shores between 1 January and 19 June this year - 3,500 of them on Lampedusa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe island, with a local population of roughly 5,000 people, has struggled desperately to keep up with the pressure. There is a holding centre on the island which has room for nearly 400 migrants but it is often packed with hundreds more waiting for a flight to transfer them to the Italian mainland.\u003cbr/\u003eOften it is the fisherman from Lampedusa who find the migrant boats when they are out fishing.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian Coast Guard constantly monitors the waters both on the sea and from the air and rescues all the boats they find, taking the migrants on board or if their boat is still seaworthy, escorting it into the port. But the Italian Coast Guard does not always make it on time.\u003cbr/\u003eA few weeks ago Pope Francis was shocked and moved by photos of saw of 98 migrants clinging to a tuna fishing nets after they had lost their boat. Eleven died before the rest were rescued, and the news prompted the Pope to arrange a visit.\u003cbr/\u003eIn typical Pope Francis style, he has done away with all pomp and will fly down on Monday morning.\u003cbr/\u003eThere will be no formal welcoming ceremony, no red carpet, no bands - just a quick handshake with the mayor and then he will take a boat out to sea to drop a wreath on the water in honour of those who have died.\u003cbr/\u003eHe will then be taken to the pier where the migrants disembark and will meet with a group of Africans. From there it's thought he will get in an old Fiat convertible that has been fixed up for the occasion to take him to Mass.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers say that in addition to meeting the migrants, the Pope will meet with the sick, the old, the fishermen and children who live on the island.\u003cbr/\u003eThe football field where mass will be held is right near what has become known as the \"Boat Cemetery,\" where all the rotting hulls of boats that have made the crossing are are piled up.  On Sunday yellow and white Vatican flags fluttered on top of the abandoned boats. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the holding centre on the island there are currently 112 migrants all from Eritrea and Somalia. Seventy-five of them are minors, three of which are girls. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are not allowed to give their names, but they are happy enough to be interviewed even though their faces cannot be shown.\u003cbr/\u003eOne said he began his journey heading to Sudan and paying 800 US dollars for that leg of the trip.  \u003cbr/\u003eFrom there he went to Libya, another 1,200 US dollars. In Libya he was thrown in jail and then escaped a couple of times.  \u003cbr/\u003eFinally he paid 1,600 US dollars for the trip across the Mediterranean.  There were 80 people on board their boat. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter some hours their engine broke down and they floated helplessly at sea.  \u003cbr/\u003eFinally after 36 hours at sea, the Italian Coast guard rescued them. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother said he spent a total of 14,000 US dollars to make his way through Sudan, the Egyptian desert to Libya.
