The delays are not abnormal in our French legal system for that kind of case. For different reasons, firstly because the case is complicated after what we know, because there are many people placed under formal investigation. Because in France there are defendants' rights that can require an investigative judge to conduct a certain number of inquiries. And to ask an investigative judge means delays, or improvement in the case perhaps, but actually delays the judge's work for weeks and weeks.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION : Bernard Provost, Criminal lawyer\u003cbr/\u003eBut there is hope that some light will be shed once painstaking tests on the Mercedes are completed.\u003cbr/\u003eA laboratory near Paris is expected to finish tests in the autumn - only then can the investigation start drawing to a conclusion.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the latest twist, a driver familiar with the Mercedes has told investigators that the car's brakes were faulty.\u003cbr/\u003eThis poses another question for judge Herve Stephan - when the Ritz rented the Mercedes from a car company, was it warned about the alleged problem?\u003cbr/\u003eProvost points out that the French legal system is different from other countries - and that is why questions like this one are still unresolved.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (French)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't know what's missing. And that hangs in particular on a part of the investigative process that the Anglo-Saxons don't understand well. That is, the judge who is at the same time conducting an investigation, someone who judges, someone who takes sides and who doesn't get involved.
