Cross covered in plastic to prevent erosion by pollution  \u003cbr/\u003eAhead of the Group of Eight summit beginning on Wednesday in Germany, which amongst other things, will focus on environmental issues, new European Union member Romania is attempting to clean up its environmental track record.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, Romania has voiced a stronger commitment to environmental protection, but the country's faltering transition to a market economy has made enforcement difficult.\u003cbr/\u003eThe town of Copsa Mica, which lies deep in the fertile valleys and wooded slopes of Transylvania, represents one of the many environmental challenges the country faces. \u003cbr/\u003eThe town, which is home to a number of factories has been named by environmentalists as one of the most polluted places in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eAn assertion supported by the comments of residents AP Television spoke to recently.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel the air has an onion taste and we feel like we are losing our stomachs, at least this is what I felt yesterday,\" one resident told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The air is very polluted and we feel gas in the air we breath,\" said a student at the local school.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, now that Romania has joined the European Union it must start to comply with EU environmental laws, and the government is coming under increasing pressure to clean up towns like Copsa Mica.\u003cbr/\u003eThe EU recently paid for the installation of four new air surveillance stations in the town.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are very pleased that once we joined EU we could have such a surveillance station. Basically we have four now and we hope to increase our efficiency in the area,\" a local researcher told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003eBut change is a slow process and experts fear it could be decades before new environmental standards start to have a real impact in town's like Copsa Mica.\u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the ongoing battle by local people to protect the environment, calls have also been made for more action to be taken against illegal deforestation.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne local resident AP Television spoke to in Copsa Mica, said he had managed to stop the trees being cut down in the area, but only with the help of the police. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Recently we have faced a massive illegal cutting of trees.  We managed to stop it in this area with the help of the police, we have everything under control,\" Sipos Attilla told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have already planted new trees but what is worrying us now is the lack of water,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a member of the EU, Romania is now being forced to take its new environmental responsibilities seriously, but how long it will take
