Wide of ceremony\u003cbr/\u003eThe Dalai Lama received an honorary degree from London Metropolitan University on Tuesday, at the start of a visit that includes a trip to Parliament and a series of speeches and public meetings. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel proud and I feel very happy that I'm receiving this honorary degree,\" Tibet's exiled spiritual leader told an assembled audience at a ceremony in the City of London.\u003cbr/\u003eHis 11-day trip is part of a lengthy international tour to rally support for greater autonomy for Tibet and is likely to draw criticism both from China and from pro-Tibet campaigners.\u003cbr/\u003eIt includes a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.\u003cbr/\u003ePro-Tibet groups had called for Brown to meet the Dalai Lama at the prime minister's official 10 Downing St. residence, as his predecessor Tony Blair did in 1999. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the meeting will take place at Lambeth Palace, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and include religious leaders from several\u003cbr/\u003efaiths.\u003cbr/\u003eSome opposition politicians accused Brown of trying to avoid angering China, which routinely protests when foreign politicians meet the Dalai Lama.\u003cbr/\u003eChina reacted angrily last week when the Dalai Lama met Germany's development minister in Berlin, issuing a formal complaint that the meeting\u003cbr/\u003eviolated Germany's commitment to the \"one-China\" policy.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon police said the force knew of at least two protests planned for Thursday, when the Dalai Lama is due to visit Parliament and address its\u003cbr/\u003eforeign affairs committee.\u003cbr/\u003eBrown, who is anxious to maintain good relations with China, meanwhile visited the Chinese Embassy in London to sign a book of condolence for victims of last week's Sichuan earthquake, and praised the rescue effort by the Chinese authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eChina has ruled Tibet since it invaded in 1950 and claims the Himalayan region has been its territory for centuries.
