Women...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe last few days of the holy month Ramadan are a time of deep reflection and spirituality for Muslims around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Tunisian capital, Tunis, many important religious ceremonies are held just a few days ahead of Eid. \u003cbr/\u003eWomen ululating on one of the most important days of this boy's childhood. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are celebrating ahead of him being circumcised.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore going to the hospital clinic, the entire family visits Sidi Mahrez's mausoleum at the heart of the Medina of Tunis.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is traditional for the family to visit the tomb of a marabout, an Islamic saint, before the surgery. \u003cbr/\u003eThis boy is in his circumcision costume, wearing a red pillbox hat with a bead embroidered hand of hamsa, to protect him from the evil eye. \u003cbr/\u003eHe and many other boys are getting circumcised at the end of Ramadan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last days of the Holy month have a particular importance for Muslims, as they are considered the most blessed time of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eCircumcisions, as well as other religious celebrations, are usually held at this period.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammed Faouzi Atalla is here for his son's circumcision ceremony.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's an old tradition that dates from long ago and that is a good omen, because it's the 27th day of Ramadan. The odd days from the 21st until the 29th are the most important ones. People make more effort and it brings them barakah (God's blessings),\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eMany families come here to pray to the city's patron saint, Sidi Mahrez.\u003cbr/\u003eDrinking water from the well found in the zawaiya is supposed to bring the boys serenity and strength ahead of the rite.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile circumcision is not mentioned in the Quran, it is a tradition for all six or seven year old boys to have it. \u003cbr/\u003eIt marks their transition into adulthood and for many, their entrance into Islam.\u003cbr/\u003eOlfa is worried about her son's surgery, but understands that it has to be done if he is to be considered a Muslim, following the actions of the Prophet Muhammad.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm afraid for him of course,\" she says, \"but it's part of the Prophet's practices and it's imperative for him to enter Islam.\"\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in the Medina, followers of the Sufi tariqa Tijaniyyah order meet to commemorate Sidi Brahim Riahi, a 19th century saint, religious scholar and founder of the order in Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 28th day of Ramadan marks the day when Riahi moved from the Zitouna mosque, where he was Great Imam, to take over the nearby zawiya.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than a religious scholar, Riahi was also an ambassador, a judge and a scientist -  greatly admired for his work in mathematics, chemistry and astronomy. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The symbol that Sidi Brahim Riahi represents is more than a folkloric symbol as a simple mausoleum. People have to know what these real saints gave Tunisia or the world in general, especially the fact that they enhanced the Islamic bibliography with books and gems that we still teach today and that are beneficial for the Umma (the Muslim community),\" says the Imam of the zawiya, Mohammed Ben Achma. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople here have gathered to pray and recite the Quran together. \u003cbr/\u003eAhead of Eid, many have come here to savour the last few days of the holy month. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We're waiting for that every year. It's an amazing thing and one of many Tunisian traditions that preserves the others, that gathers people.
