stars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement was made on Tuesday by two separate research teams in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eInfrared light was measured from the two planets using Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope.\u003cbr/\u003eOne planet, known as HD 209458b, nicknamed Osiris, is orbiting a star 153 light years from Earth in the constellation of Pegasus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other, TrES-1, is an even more distant 489 light years away in the constellation Lyra.\u003cbr/\u003eThe HD 209458b observation was made by a team led by Dr. Drake Deming at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland.\u003cbr/\u003eA team from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, captured light from TrES-1.\u003cbr/\u003eStudies of the infrared light streaming from the two giant planets suggest they are made of hot, swirling gases that reach at least 13-hundred degrees Fahrenheit (704.4 degrees Celsius).\u003cbr/\u003eBoth planets circle their stars in less than four days at a distance of less than 6.44 million (m) kilometres (four (m) million miles).\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast, Earth orbits an average of 149.7 million (m) kilometres (93 million (m) miles) from the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the mid-1990s, scientists have discovered more than 130 so-called extrasolar planets. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the stars they orbit are so distant and shine so brightly that they tend to overwhelm the planets from view.\u003cbr/\u003eTo find them, astronomers indirectly measure the tiny gravitational wobble that orbiting planets exert on their suns, or the brief dimming of starlight\u003cbr/\u003ethat occurs when a planet's orbit carries it in front of the star.\u003cbr/\u003eBut hot celestial objects like these gas planets also emit infrared light. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has detectors to collect these infrared signals. \u003cbr/\u003eInfrared light contains specific signatures in different wavelengths that reveal more
