So the weight loss was a great journey for me. It was hard in its own right, but it was great, it was wonderful. It helped me focus on what I needed to do and I got to, you know like I said, put my blinders on and not look in the rear view mirror at the rest of the world and what was going on in my life. Thankfully I had a wife and family that were taken care of behind me, and I got to go to work.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMcConaughey plays Ron Woodroof in the film, a real life rodeo-loving Texan who in 1985 was diagnosed with HIV and given 30 days to live. Refusing to accept that death sentence, he defies the medical community -- and the FDA and IRS along the way -- and begins smuggling in alternative medicines from Mexico and other countries that better treated the symptoms of HIV and AIDS than what is available in the U.S. at the time.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the treatments begin to improve his health, he sets up a \"Buyers Club\" for others with the disease. For $400 (USD) a month, he offers to provide them with the latest alternative treatments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Thirty Seconds from Mars\" lead singer Jared Leto plays McConaughey's partner, a transsexual woman named Rayon, in the venture.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Drop 30 pounds in three weeks, wax my entire body and walk around in heels for a couple months, that seemed like the perfect opportunity to return to acting, yes!\" joked Leto, who had been focusing on his music career for the five years before what he called \"the role of a lifetime\" came his way.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope that the transgender community is really proud,\" said Leto. \"I hope they recognize and see a real, living person up there, not a cliche or a stereotype.\" \u003cbr/\u003eJennifer Garner rounds out the cast as a Dallas doctor who is friends with Rayon and begins to see that Woodroof's treatments are helping patients more than the medical trials being offered at the hospital.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't want to go to work, and I was grumpy when this movie came across my life,\" said Garner, whose youngest son was 9-months old when shooting began about a year ago. \"I didn't really want to do it. I liked being home, but I loved it and it was working with Matthew and working with Jean-Marc, whose films I love.
