So those who choose partners from other faiths are forced either to convert or leave the country to be married, at enormous emotional and financial cost.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, President Elias Hrawi has proposed to amend the constitution to allow civil marriage in Lebanon. Despite the fact that civil marriage would be optional, Hrawi's proposal has sparked a heated debate within the religious community. Religious leaders are united in their belief that civil marriage is against the teachings of the church.
