Wide shot of sun shining through branches
Towering Redwood trees are a national icon in the US and their timber has provided homes for Americans for generations.
These trees are some of the tallest on the planet, but it's only recently that other countries around the world have started seeing their potential as a sustainable source of timber.
In Wales, they have the oldest Redwood grove outside America and their number is set to grow with 77,000 trees to be planted in the next three years.
The Welsh countryside is blessed with rolling hills, wide open spaces and an abundance of trees with lush green canopies.
But neighbouring the native woodlands in Leighton, Mid-Wales is a forest of foreign origin.
A grove of Californian Redwoods planted over 140 years ago that continues to thrive.
David Williams, a warden who's been working with the trees for more than 30 years, says he knows why the Redwoods have survived.
"We have fairly good mineral soils and we have the climate, which is near enough to their natural habitat in Western States to thrive. Adequate rainfall, adequate moisture is very important to them," says Williams.
The Redwood seedlings that took root here were imported from America in 1858 and more have been planted since.
At 30 acres, this is the largest Redwood grove in Europe and to diversify its forests the Welsh government plans to plant 77,000 more by 2016.
Redwood is also becoming more popular among the British construction industry because of its appearance and durability.
But these characteristics nearly caused its extinction in America during the 1960s after being logged on a massive scale for decades.
"People thought it was there forever, it would last forever, they could just cut as much as they want and they really went about it. There are whole towns built of Redwood. Eureka in North California is virtually all built of coast Redwood," says Williams.
In 1958, the owner of this grove died and bequeathed it to the Royal Forestry Society, a UK charity that educates people about woodland preservation.
They've continued to plant Redwood trees, hoping they'll one day catch up with the tallest tree here, towering at nearly 100 metres above the ground.
"Redwoods have been around in Mid Wales for sometime, but they were planted as parkland trees rather than as a stand of trees like this and it was an interesting experiment I think by the original owner and it's one that is noted throughout the country because it is so, so special," says Trevor Trevor from the Royal Forestry Society.
But maintaining its special qualities requires a lot of hard work, and William Jones is the man who is brought in to do it.
He thins the grove every five years, when damaged and misshapen trees are cut down and removed.
The extra space encourages the remaining Redwoods to thrive as they suck up the nutrients that their fallen neighbours fed on.
William welcomes the planting of more Redwoods as they grow quickly, are robust and defend themselves strongly against pests and diseases.
"The more trees we have, the more robust they will come to withstand these pests, but inevitable all trees will have some sort of pest over time. But I think the coastal Redwood will withstand most things. Like heat, drought and they re-grow after felling. There's a lot going for coastal Redwoods, so I think more people should plant them," says Jones.
The grove is popular with visitors who are intrigued by the size of these iconic American trees, thriving on a hillside in Mid-Wales.
And interest in the Redwood is finally growing among people building their own homes, who are attracted to the tree's rich, red appearance.
However, stripping the bark from the timber requires specialised equipment and for many years this stunted the Redwood's growth as a building material.
"Over 20 years we've tried to get the Redwood into the commercial market. The mills were very interested in it to start with, but then the bark was a problem and since then we've been struggling for the last 20 years. I think the last two years we've finally been able to use it in the property market although it's the upmarket of the houses like, not the cheap version," says Jones.
If more and more Redwoods are cut down to be used in construction, the Royal Forestry Society know their commitment to replanting and preservation means there will be a plentiful supply of trees for people to see and enjoy.
"It's the size, it's the majesty, it's the beauty of these trees. Much bigger than anything else which is growing around," says Trevor.
The planting of Redwoods in Wales began as an experiment nearly 150 years ago, but it's one that's now paying off.
