I hope that one day, his Holiness will have the opportunity to visit China and take a look around. He could then get to know the facts and from a correct view. He would find out that neither Catholic believers, nor Catholics priests are being persecuted because of their religious belief.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Li Laifu, Chinese catholic\u003cbr/\u003eBut, according to many human rights groups, the official view differs from the reality in China.\u003cbr/\u003eThey estimate that there are as many as 10-12 (m) million Catholics practicing their religion in underground churches across China.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the same for other forms of Christianity.\u003cbr/\u003eIndependent religious activities - such as this Protestant mass - take place in private homes.\u003cbr/\u003eThese \"home churches\" have been persecuted by the state for many years.\u003cbr/\u003eMany religious leaders have been jailed and even if this kind of detention is decreasing, harassment, destruction of property and heavy fines are still prevalent.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday, an American religious delegation is expected to arrive in China to see first hand the situation in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the trip is likely to be heavily controlled by the government and the visitors will find it difficult to see the unofficial side of religion in China.\u003cbr/\u003eBeijing, China - February 8, 1998\u003cbr/\u003e1.
