Instead it can adopt elements already existing in traditional culture."
The model home features solar panels and a rooftop garden that cools the building in the summer and offers a sun terrace in the winter.
Many of the building materials are reclaimed from demolished structures. Yet the structure of the building looks similar to the traditional Shanghainese shikumen style of architecture.
The Finland Pavilion packages sustainability in modern Finnish design. The entire building, known as the Giant's Kettle and designed by Helsinki-based architect's office JKMM, is covered in shingles that resemble fish scales.
The 25,000 shingles are a paper-plastic composite, all made from recycled industry waste by UPM, a global paper and forestry company.
The building has been designed to have a long life cycle, past the end of the six month long Shanghai World Expo.
The entire pavilion will be disassembled after the Expo ends and reassembled at a future site in China or abroad, "like Lego" says the Deputy Commissioner General of the Finland pavilion, Mikko Pustinen.
The building sits amidst a pond of water that is a calming presence for visitors to the hectic Expo site and reflects the important Finn's place on nature. The pavilion also features very few windows and thick insulation to keep out the heat of Shanghai's summer.
"I think Finns are serious about sustainability so we don't like it to be just thrown away after the Expo so we want to find a good home, and also hopefully in a small way but still in an important way to
contribute to the sustainable principle and also practices in China," says Pustinen.
The Swiss Pavilion is strikingly different, with an open structure wrapped in a net decorated with red solar cells that glint in the sunlight.
Manuel Salchli, the Swiss Pavilion director says that the design showcases the fun side of sustainability.
"The solar cells absorb the solar energy that is around, there's plenty in Shanghai, and then there are LED lights which are powered with these solar cells and they blink and they actually show to the
visitors how much energy there is available which could be used sustainably."
The solar cells will be sold off to visitors during the Expo as souvenirs.
The main feature of the pavilion is a cable car ride up to the pavilion's roof, which has been planted with a rooftop garden of wildflowers and grasses.
Visitors can enjoy an amusement park feel.
Designed by Buchner Brndler Architects and Element GmbH, the pavilion is meant to address the idea of urban-rural interaction, with the countryside of Switzerland represented by the pavilion rooftop field overlooking neighbouring pavilions.
The nearby Denmark Pavilion features walls pockmarked with holes on all sides. Designed by Bjarke Ingels, of BIG Architecture, the building uses little air-conditioning, depending instead on fans to cool down the pavilion and the holes in the wall to provide ventilation.
The pavilion showcases Denmark's own vision for what a modern city could look like. It's central feature are bikes on offer to visitors to explore the pavilion.
The walkway in the pavilion also features a lane specifically for bikers.
Denmark, known as the Kingdom of Bicycles, wanted to represent that aspect of their culture to visitors through the Pavilion.
The lines for the bikes are sometimes two hours long says Anders Hoejgaarb, a Denmark Pavilion guide, but he says visitors are always excited to use them.
"Of course it is a sustainable way to travel and much more sustainable than a car, so that's maybe one of the reasons, the main reason why we have the bikes here at the pavilion," he says.
There is of course some concern about the focus on sustainability at the World Expo when the Expo itself is not a sustainable event - bringing an estimated 700,000,000 visitors from China and abroad and requiring huge resources for transportation, waste removal and energy consumption.
Richard Brubaker, Professor of Sustainability and Responsible Leadership at China Europe International Business School says that these concerns are important to consider, but that the educational impact of the World Expo could actually popularise sustainability around the world and in China and bring about a faster implementation of these technologies and practices.
"If people come to expo and take away the tangible understanding that there are existing solutions that they could put into place right now that reduce their energy footprints,
